Bakery in Presidio

We visited this bakery three years ago. At the time, I was so excited to find they sold mexican vanilla. So nice to see the shop is still hopping with business.

Shafter Ghost Town

This is an interesting story of boom and bust. For more information, read "The richest acre in Texas" below.

Shafter was a sizeable town with rock cabins on both sides of the road.

"Located in West Texas, Shafter ghost town is a former mining settlement that once thrived in the early 20th century. Founded in 1907, the town was named after Confederate Army officer William R. Shafter, who discovered the area while patrolling the region.

History

Shafter Lake, a saltwater lake, was the focal point of the town’s economy. The town grew rapidly, with a population of 500, boasting a bank, churches, post office, school, and even its own newspaper. However, the town’s fortunes began to decline after losing an election for the county seat and a devastating smallpox epidemic in 1910-1911. The epidemic killed a significant portion of the population, and the town’s residents eventually abandoned the area."

Dust devil

Two T's bistro and grocery store

Once we were finished tanking the bike, we decided to fill up our stomachs across the way at Two T's. It's home cooking at its best, and Haukur had a fantastic and generous breakfast burrito with bacon and eggs. Unexpectedly, coffee was on the house. ❤️Meer informatie

The donkeys of Corrizozo

The first thing we noticed when driving into eclectic Corrizozo was the abundant number of painted donkey statues dotting the streets, courtyards, and even roof-tops. I spoke with the owners of Rosie's Kickass* Pizza and they explained that, back in 2005, in an attempt to draw in visitors and business to the town, the town council bought a herd of aluminum donkeys.

The burros became so popular that more than 400 of the painted burros were sold to owners in more than 30 states.

Almost every artist in Lincoln County has painted one, including some fourth graders who had a field day with Mondrian blocks and Pollock splatters. Besides strengthening the region’s artistic appeal, the burros (selling for $500–$1,300 apiece) help animal-rescue efforts.

Looking at the current situation in Corrizozo, that boom is over.

Rosie's Kickass Pizza

There are so many small towns barely making it in the USA that it can be touch and go to find a place to eat. Haukur and I rode up and down the streets of Corrizozo until he noticed that one small house seemed to be a shop of some kind or the other.

So we got off our bike to take a look. To our surprise, we opened the door to find ourselves in the living and dining rooms of the cottage. Moving on was a 1950's-style, eat-in kitchen where artisan pizzas, and homemade brownies and chocolate chip cookies were being made.

Hats off to the owners/cooks (see picture). It's a stop that's worth a detour.

Live music every Friday night.
