Coincidentally, "Narcos: Mexico" was being filmed in San Luis Potosi and the actors and film crew were staying at the same hotel as we were.

There was a crowd of fans hoping to get just a glance of one of Latin America's most famous stars, Alfonso Herrera.

We were sitting in the bar of the hotel, and guests were coming by asking to get a picture of Herrera. He was happy to oblige.

Of all people, I was too shy to ask for a picture of me and him together. Dang it.Okumaya devam et

Date night in San Luis Potosi

One of the highlights of the ride from Austin to Mexico City was visiting San Luis Potosi. Back in the 1960's, when I was a little girl, we took the family car through Mexico.

I was so impressed by the restaurant we went to in San Luis Potosi. We were to wear our very best clothes - Pop in a suit with a handkerchief in his breast pocket; Mom in a dress that accentuated her beauty.

Walking through the maze of cobbled streets, looking to find the restaurant in an exotic area called a pedestrian zone and Pop getting a little stressed.

Finally, we arrived. Pop ordered something exotic called a Caesar salad. I was captivated. The salad was prepared at our table. How sophisticated.

It is a bittersweet memory for me - it was to be our last family vacation. Our parents divorced a year and a half later.Okumaya devam et

The first day of the trip with "boots on the ground" was spent floating through the gardens of Xochimil and its some 100 square miles of canals.

According to Wikipedia, "Xochimilco is best known for its canals, which are left from what was an extensive lake and canal system that connected most of the settlements of the Valley of Mexico. These canals, along with artificial islands called chinampas, attract tourists and other city residents to ride on colorful gondola-like boats called trajineras around the 170 km (110 mi) of canals. This canal and chinampa system, as a vestige of the area's precolonial past, has made Xochimilco a Works Heritage Site in 1950,"

With long-haul flights and missed connections, it was a great way to start the trip.Okumaya devam et

Island of the Dolls

On the creepier island of the canals is the Isla de las Munecas. The Island of the Dolls is dedicated to the lost soul of a young girl who died under strange circumstances. Local legend says that the dolls whisper to each other.

Floating by, I felt like I was in a Stephen King movie. Goose bumps. Seriously.
