With its twists and turns along a one lane road, this is one of my favorite mountain passes. The views are majestic. Do yourself a favor and stop for a drink or a hearty alpine meal at the Grünalm and enjoy the lovely alpine music playing in the background.

The alpine road was built at the beginning of the 1960s to make it easier for the local farmers to work their alpine pastures as well as keep area flooding under control. Word soon got around about the fantastic panoramic view of the Zillertal Alps from the road, and so the simple gravel road was opened to guests at the end of the 1960s.

In 1978, a connection was built between the road from Zell over the Zellberg and the Höhenstraße. The high costs involved in the complete asphalting and maintenance of the 50 km long panoramic road made it necessary to turn it into a toll road.

At €7,00 per motorcycle, it is definitely worth the expense.Read more
