• House Building

    27 lipca 2009, Kambodża ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

So i have no idea where we built the houses - this is being written 10 years after.
We also visited an AIDS orphanage at some point - i remember being shown an infant in a cot... only it wasn't... it was like a 5 year old. That was the moment that made the biggest impact. We didn't go to build relationships - we went to paint.

Basically my memories of building the houses are that i was not overly helpful and hit my thumb with the hammer 1000 times. lets be real i probably cried lol.
we played with the children, they didn't speak English but we drew a hop scotch in the dirt with a stick and demonstrated what to do with a rock.

A memory i have is that they didn't appear to be over appreciative. now in reality they were probably besides themselves but cultural difference probably played a big part in their lack of expressing emotion.

  • Killing fields

    13 lipca 2009, Kambodża ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

The S21 camp was my favourite part of the trip - it was by far the most confronting. I hope to go back as an adult to properly learn and comprehend.
They left the blood on the floor from the victims. They had photo mugshots of victims on display - the fear in their eyes was gut wrenching. Some photos affected me more than others but all were soul crunching.
They had displays of some of the torture techniques and the rules that had to be followed.
A lot of people in Cambodia are missing limbs because of landmines. i will never forget a man we encountered outside S21. It looked like he had been boiled alive, Including his eyeballs. I was frightened and ran away; an action i regret. But seriously, his eyes looked like literally hard boiled eggs, can describe it.
we also went to the killing fields which had a building with thousands of skulls in it and mass graves describing what was in each. So many people are buried there you are walking on top of bones.
The photo below is of the designated WALKWAY.
    they are bones.

    Huge and fun to explore.

Woman can't touch the monks but they allowed us to get a picture :)
the big root trees are awesome and famous.

Can't remember anything other than it was a highlight. My 16 year old self didn't really retain any info. Czytaj więcej

  • Cambodia

    13 lipca 2009, Kambodża ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

In Cambodia I tried Tarantula, frogs legs and a silk worm.

Tarantula and frogs legs tasted like chicken. probably because they were deep fried. When we were driving a lady came up to the bus and opened her mouth and a LIVE Tarantula crawled out. eeeekk.

The silk worm was horrendous. It has a gooey center i was unprepared for - very peppery. No need to do again. YUCK.

We rode on an Elephant - this was before the mistreatment of these animals came to light in the media - would not even consider doing now. A disgusting trade.
Still, its done and at the time i was so excited.

I still have never come across such a smell as that of the markets.
    IT WAS NOT OK.
