Anybody Seen a Pyramid Around Here?

    March 10, 2020 in Egypt ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We were on the redeye out of Athens, departing at just about midnight for a 95 minute flight to Cairo. Made it in with no issues, got medically screened (no COVID-19 on us), got our Visa On Arrival (US $25), and headed for the door. Quick stop at the ATM for some local cash, and off we go. As we head towards the door, dude pulls out a price brochure, and offers us a ride to town for 350 Egyptian Pounds (~US $22). City of Cairo is wild. Lots of highways, but no one appeared to notice the lines painted for lanes. Cars were all over the place at random. Drive to the hotel took about 30-40 minutes, everything looks weird at 3 am. We pull up in front of the hotel, on a side street, and the front desk is there waiting for us (got an email while waiting in Athens, asking when we would arrive). We get all signed in, and they show us to our room. It is huge, basically an apartment in a residence hotel. Pretty much went right to sleep as it was nearly 4 am by this time, but woke up to banging and pounding at 8 am. Seems they are remodeling the other apartments on this floor. I eventually got out of bed and looked out the window . . . looks a lot different in the light of day. We have a kitchen, so went to the store to get some food. Short walk around the corner (about 300 meters) to a local grocery store. Well stocked, but chaos. Narrow isles, with people bouncing around everywhere. We grabbed enough for 2-3 days, and headed back to hang out and relax. Tomorrow we will head out to see the Pyramids and other attractions. Life is good.Read more
