2021-On On to my 100th Country

I started this year having hashed in 93 countries, so the goal was to get to 100 . . . and I did. Finished the year having hashed in 102 countries, adding Ecuador, Colombia, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Czechia, Scotland, Peru, Brazil, and Paraguay. Czytaj więcej
  • Wandering around Asuncion

    1 grudnia 2021, Paragwaj ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Arrived in Asuncion on Tuesday morning, and Uber'd our way over to Ban & DDM's place. After getting sorted, we went for a walk around the immediate neighborhood, then on Wednesday we went down town for a wander. Very interesting city, right on the border with Argentina. Czytaj więcej

  • Asuncion H3 Trail #1

    5 grudnia 2021, Paragwaj ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

It has been 18 years since the last time Paraguay had a hash trail, but today was the day of a new beginning. Ban the Cock and Double Dutch Mountains have been here a year, but were feeling something missing in their lives . . . so a hash club was needed. Well off the beaten path, the trail started out near the airport, but after crossing a few streets, trail found its way into the grassy hinterland, going down dirt streets, foot paths, and through some dense undergrowth on its way across the countryside.
We had 2 hares (Ban the Cock & MaBouche) with a walkers and runners option. Seven hounds set off in chase, with 3 runners at first, then one started walking, and one meandered onto the walkers trail, so I had the Twilight Zone aura of hashing alone, and breaking all the checks. So the proclaimed 8 Km trail (was actually about 10 Km), but I managed a cool 12.5 Km excursion into the hash history of Paraguay.
Since it was the first hash, in 18 years here, you would expect a lot of visitors. But it was a bit unusual to have one visitor from Mozambique (Maputo H3), one from Brazil (Brazil Nuts H3), one from Bolivia (La Paz H3), two virgins (one from Brazil and one from Holland), an embassy representative from Trinidad and Tobago, our two hares from Europe . . . and little ole me (I don’t remember where I am from anymore). A robust circle followed trail, and then we all headed up the street for dinner. Great fun with many new hashers and new friends, and probably the best trail I have run in South America. Well Done, and long live the Asuncion H3.

  • Quito H3 Trail #1

    11 grudnia 2021, Ekwador ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

A New Hash is Born. For the second week in a row in South America, a new hash club has begun (last week it was the Asuncion H3 in Paraguay), this week in Quito, Ecuador. We had 25 hashers at the start, and the pack grew to 29 by the time we all reached the end. After the customary chalk talk, and introductions, the pack set off on an elevation challenged trail, peaking at 9852 feet.

It had rained in the early morning hours, which gave the trail that extra muddy feeling, and we splashed our way along. Reaching the Runner (8 Km) / walker (6 Km) split, the pack bisected and continued on. As all things that go up, they must also come down. So did the pack, eventually reaching the On-In where copious amounts of cold beverages awaited the thirsty pack.

The circle was overwhelmed by first time hashers here in Ecuador, but they all seemed enthusiastic to come back out for another go round. Almost the entire pack joined us at the apres for food, beer, and socializing. Wishing much success to the future of Quito H3, and thanks for letting me hare your first (rebirth) trail.

Back in the US, and hope to get in more than 1 trail per week again. It was a nicely cool evening of Christmas lights, as 2 Rung Circus led us on trail through the Adventure Island (near Temple Terrace) area. 2 Rung is really getting the haring thing down now (and it was his 100th trail with JRH3), with a well marked eagle trail of nearly 5 miles. Plenty of zigzagging led us to some massive light displays, complete with music and animation, seemed to get me in the festive mood and ready for Christmas (unlike the music I was hearing a month ago that was WAY too early). We had a pack of over a dozen, and we even had our dear friend ON AHEAD show up late just to support a naming that did not happen due to time constraints. Well done to 2 Rung . . . and ON ON to next week when HPV sets the actual Christmas Lights in Seminole Heights trail. Czytaj więcej

  • Sarasota Circus H3 #296

    19 grudnia 2021, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

It was once again my privilege to hare for the Circus Hash. About 8 months ago, in the depths of the COVID era, I was also the hare and was going to set this trail. The day arrived, it was pouring rain, and only 4 or 5 hashers turned up. So, I agreed to set a shorter version due to the weather and all walkers. This time around, the weather was beautiful, and we managed to have 15 hasher turn up. It was not sink up to your waist kind of shiggy, but it did have a fence to climb under, and a couple water crossings along with plenty of dirt tracks. Eagles got over 5 miles of joy, while the walkers scored 3 miles. After a jovial circle, we all meandered over to the local Irish Pub for some grub and grog . . . and all was well for the last Circus Hash trail of the 2021. Czytaj więcej

Another shitty Haz trail, but it was a lovely evening for a hash. With a 10 minute head start, our hare was off into the darkness. Trail zigged its way around buildings on the west side of Dale Mabrey, before crossing over, and dodging a few buildings headed south, eventually meeting up with the walker’s trail on the backside of Walmart. Together from there, trail wound its way through MacFarlane Park, where it stealthfully butted up against the Taco Tuesday trail from the night before, overlapping for about 100 meters as it passed under I 275. But after crossing under the highway, trail cut hard right, and headed back towards home. Hugging the tree line, and moving around a few trees, the beer check was hidden in the hedgerow.

The final stretch brought trail around the lake, crossed back over Dale Mabrey, and on home. Five miles or so for Eagle, and about 3 for the turkeys . . . the whole pack came in within about 10 minute of each other, walkers first, soon followed by the runners. After a couple beers, the pack of about 20 circled up for some entertainment, where several down downs ended the evening of joy. And that’s all I got to say about that . . .
