2021-On On to my 100th Country

I started this year having hashed in 93 countries, so the goal was to get to 100 . . . and I did. Finished the year having hashed in 102 countries, adding Ecuador, Colombia, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Czechia, Scotland, Peru, Brazil, and Paraguay. Read more

  • Hogtown H3 Trail #1875

    September 13, 2021 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After a week in Canada getting fat on Mama's cooking, I had to get out for some exercise. Finding my way down to Toronto, I was able to get in another trail with the Hogtown H3. I checked into my hotel early, and relaxed for a bit before heading down to the start . . . and decided to finish up an article I was working on about hashing in Scotland. Totally losing track of time, I had 30 minutes left to make the drive and find parking. Google maps told me it was going to take between 25-50 minutes at that hour, but I managed to sneak into the starting circle just as the hare started to explain what we would see. So in less than 5 minutes, we were off on a fun 4 mile trail ( A to B ), with a pack of about a dozen (only 5 runners).

We were doing fine, making our way, when just about twilight, the chalk changed from yellow to pink . . . and we had a harder time seeing marks . . . but we prevailed not only to find the marks, but also the beer stop (where we had to purchase beer for circle on this BYOB free event). Walking the final 500 meters to the end, we passed a view stop, where the hare explained something about a dominatrix hiding behind the bushes (or something like that), and the end was on a corner park near the Prince Edward Viaduct. We had a fun circle, sang some songs, drank all the beer, and then headed off into the night. Special thanks (and great to see) Sex Toy for joining me for dinner afterwards.

Speaking of Sex Toy, it was back in 1995 when I first ran a hash trail with the Hogtown H3, when I met Sex Toy and Rose Eh. I don't recall much about trail, but I do remember the circle after, where the three of us sang hash songs for what seems like hours . . . what an amazing time that was. Anyway, great to be back on the Hogtown H3. On On.

    September 15, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

After the drive from Canada back down to Greene, I had an early start leaving at 1 am and headed to JFK to fly out at 10 am. After boarding the plane, and taxiing out, the captain states we have a light indicator on the fuel system, and we had to return to the gate. Initial indication is that it would be about 15-20 minutes to add some fuel, and off we go. A half hour goes by, and he comes back and says . . . other issues have come up, and they are going to replace a couple tires on the aircraft. Flight is now delayed another 30 minutes. Finally, 90 minutes after our scheduled departure, we are airborne and on our way to Florida. Glad we got that stuff taken care of BEFORE we were in the air. :)

So here I am in Tampa again, hanging out before heading out to Hawaii for teh Aloha H3 30th Anniversary, week long hashing event. Aloha H3 was the first hash club I founded, so getting the chance to go back out and hare the trail.

Here in Tampa, we had probably the BEST 2-Rung trail ever. After cutting behind a couple buildings, trail hit the main road and turned left. Crossing over, we soon found a check back, and trail headed up along the railroad tracks for a long way, with several checks. Eventually, we found trail passing through a hedgerow into a business complex, and a boob check. Patiently waiting for Casual Friday to catch up, we eventually were back on trail back on the main road, where it crossed back over to a which-ee-way. Turning left, we headed back towards the start, only to find a right turn that eventually turned into a false trail. Back to the main road, trail again turned right, up along an off ramp, where we found loads of ankle deep shiggy trail along the highway. Splashing our way along, a beer check was eventually found hidden in the brush, before we crossed back over the highway. We then found a true trail arrow pointing us right once again, and into a park along the dump. From there, it was up the sidewalk and back into the parking lot where loads of cold beer awaited the sweaty pack. A totally S H I T T Y . . . T R A I L. Well done 2-Rung. It was also my 150th trail with the Jolly Roger H3.

Back on trail with the St Pete H3. We had about a dozen on trail for this romp around Tropicana Field. There was a game on, and we passed right in front of the entry point. DJTJ dropped huge handfuls of flour right in front of the stadium, surprised there were no issues. About halfway in, we hit a check that totally threw us for a loop, but we eventually found a true trail arrow over in a parking lot, and were back at it. That led into the beer stop, before circling back towards the on in. Passing back under 275, trail wrapped around the back side of 3 Daughters Brewery, and a shot stop 100 meters from the finish. Circle was fun, and then we tried to get some food . . . but the kitchen was closed. So we ventured toward town and eventually found a burger joint open. Good times on the humid evening.Read more

    September 18, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, just perfect for a hash trail. As the pack slowly gathered, all 13 of us, the anticipation was bursting. We actually had a true virgin along with us, thanks to Capt Blowboat. Eventually, it was hare (Hazukashii) away, and the pack milled about smartly, ready to make pursuit. Trail basically traversed the sea of empty parking lots, zipping behind all the vacant buildings, and eventually came to a water crossing, that nobody crossed, not even the hare (hahaha). Using an old ploy of marking one side, then setting trail around it, and putting a big fat arrow on the other side . . . did not work at all. But the pack did continue to make tracks through the urban jungle, until they found the turkey / eagle split. Turkeys went left, eagles went right, and crossed over the main drag, and found even more twists and turns, and behind the building grassy areas, that took them right to a beer stop. From there, it was behind the medical center, around the lake, and down the road to the power lines . . . and this is where 2-Rung did his thing. Leading the pack at this point, he got half way up the field, thought he saw trail going another direction . . . and ended up coming in 15 min behind the pack. He would be awarded not only the DFL, but a spontaneous renaming of 2-Wrong!!! Hence forth, and all that sh*t . . . good times on this 5+ mile runners and 3+ mile walkers trail. The circle was proctored by Meta, who kept it short and sweet, and we were soon off to dinner at the local Pizza shop. All in all, just another shitty trail. On On.Read more

It was a Full Moon extraordinaire. Birthday Girl . . . Where's Balldo, ably assisted by whipping boy ICP, took us on a 4 mile jaunt through Seminole Heights, on a hot and muggy evening. We had two visitors, one from Greeneville, SC, and one from the GATR H3, that rounded out our pack of 11. Fortunately, they both made it to the finish, so we don't need to coordinate our stories. 🙂 Circle was entertaining, with plenty of laughs, and then we broke camp and headed over to the Mermaid Bar for some late night grub. Slackers Zamboner and BOGO were there waiting for us, but could not be bothered to get all sweaty with us on trail. 🙂 Another great evening on the hash in Tampa. On On.Read more

It was not the most interesting trail, but it was well marked. The hare said it would be about 5 miles, but 7.17 miles later, we finally made it in to the finish. Sh*tting Bull, who we saw headed backwards on trail even before the beer check, had still not made it in to the finish by the time we completed circle. Math faithfully headed out to drive around and pick him up, while we all proceeded to the hares house for BBQ pork and a swim in the pool. All's well that ends well. Thanks to Cannabis Licked Her for the fun evening, and the good eats. On On, until next time.Read more

Since the plane broke yesterday, this flight 24 hours hence has been on schedule. The bummer is, that yesterday, I was getting bumped up to first class on the leg from San Francisco to Honolulu. Today, I not only am in the back, but in that row with the tight sides, that have the fold up screens. I always avoid those seats, but somehow United managed to make it a much less enjoyable flight. Plus, every jackass that comes down the wrong isle wants to shimmy through in front of me. I guess it could be worse, I could be bleeding from both eyes.Read more

    September 28, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

    H5 Trail #2062
It has already been a full schedule of hash events (this being the 4th hash trail), as part of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Aloha H3. Tonight we had a solid mixture of locals and visitors numbering over 30, for an evening jog around the University of Hawaii, Manoa campus. Trail (hared by Hello Shaved Kitty and Master Splinter-bator) was not long in the usual sense, but we did have a hearty climb after a circuit around the campus, leading up the hill to a beer stop overlooking Honolulu. After a long look at the city, the pack made their way back down the hill and into the finish, where copious amounts of cold beer and snacks awaited them. We eventually circled up, where everyone was introduced, and we got a bit of entertainment from our many visitors. KKSB led a rousing circle, starting with his many predications of the future in 2062, as well as many other reminders of occurrences of days gone by. One that was missed, and I did not bring up at the time, was that 2062 will be the 100th anniversary of FATHER HASH (a.k.a. the HHH Singapore). Had HHH Singapore not been founded by Ian Cumming, there may have never been the worldwide phenomenon that has become the Hash House Harriers. Buy me a beer sometime, and I will be happy to further elaborate on this subject, until then . . . glad to see so many old friends, and meet up with all our visitors. On On to several more days of hash events, with a hash social in Kakaako tomorrow night, starting at the Honolulu Beerworks . . . meeting anytime after 6:30 PM. We have the side room reserved, so don’t be a stranger. (note: bring your mask, and a copy of your vaccine record).Read more

    Ahhhhhh-LOOOOOOOOO-Haaaaaaaa!!
It was a week long celebration of the 30 glorious years of the Aloha H3, dating back to 22 Sep 1991. From small acorns, mighty Oaks grow. We had 6 trails leading up to the culmination event, which was the running of trail #1596 of the Aloha H3 yesterday. Starting from the Sunset Beach Elementary parking lot, trail immediately made its way UP . . . before proceeding on a rollicking rolling adventure through the jungles of the North Shore. There was plenty of ups and downs on nearly 8 miles of eagle, and 3 miles for the turkey, a couple great views from the bunkers (with beer), and adventure in the depths of the unknown. On On.

  • Honolulu, Hawaii H3 (H5) Trail #2063

    October 5, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

After 7 successful trails, and three well participated social events, it was time for one final hash. The regularly scheduled H5. Also the third trail in a row I hared.

Trail started out well, with the walkers properly instructed of the turkey / eagle split. Then 10 minutes later, the rest of the eagles were properly instructed, and off they go. So then, our hare, Hazukashii sneaks back up the hill to remark the finish, as this was an A to A trail that would come back in on the same trail. BUT, there were a few hashers that turned up late. Totally my fault for not stopping them, to explain the instructions . . . but just telling them as they passed by . . . if you are on eagle, when you get to the 5 dollops of flour, go to the T and turn LEFT. Well, this is what turned out to be a problem. 😊 Some hashers came down the hill, and turned right . . . taking them back around on the eagle trail. My huge Mea Culpa. I should have marked it differently, somehow making it clear that there was a trail cross over, and for the eagles to head back through the T/E split, and follow the turkey trail on home. Just look at the map, it seems clear . . . but I am cursed. 😊 Anyway . . . a couple of us went back out on trail, and all wandering hashers were recovered in short order . . . much love to you all. Hashing is my life, and I don’t know what I would do if someone ended up lost or hurt on one of my trails. Farewell, I am flying out tomorrow, next stop PERU.Read more

    October 9, 2021 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After several years, I have finally arrived in Peru. Unfortunately, I will not be able to visit Machu Picchu on this trip. Off to the hash . . . met a couple hashers in Miraflores, and we taxied for almost an hour to the northern end of Lima for this beach trail. The rest of the pack straggled in over the next 90 minutes, as we finally assembled at a nature park. Starting with a bit of culture and a tour of the local wildlife, we then set off for a run up the beach, to see the pukas. After a make shift beer stop, we all headed up and over a few dunes, eventually making our way back into town.

We recessed into a little chicken restaurant for dinner, and circle. I thought it fitting to buy everyone dinner. The Lima hashers then presented me with a sweatshirt and T-shirt (unfortunately they were both a bit snug, but I rolled with it. It was an excellent adventure here in Peru.

  • 2 Years of Hash Bliss

    October 10, 2021 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

It was 2 years ago today, that I set off on this epic journey to hash the world. When I departed from Honolulu on 10 Oct 2019, I had no idea how long it would last . . . considering I had just had open heart surgery in July 2019. But what a ride, so far . . .

    • 730 days
    • 292 hash trails
    • 64 trails hared
    • 32 countries

Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Indonesia, Cambodia, Saipan, Guam, East Timor, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, PNG, Australia, Nepal, Bangladesh, Oman, Cyprus, Greece, Croatia, Egypt, Bahrain, USA, Ecuador, Colombia, Jordan, Germany, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Czechia, Scotland, Peru

I was reminded that there was over 400 days I did not hash. :) So got to thinking about that, probably more than 60 flights in there. Keeping up the website, 24 monthly event emails, 25 In The Spotlight articles published, and over 2000 hash club listings updated in the HHH Genealogy.

Reconnecting with old friends, meeting hundreds of new friends. Bucket List items seen . . . The Pyramids, Acropolis, Galapagos Islands, Petra . . . and the primary goal of this trip was achieved yesterday . . . hashing in my 100th country.

What a life . . . I love it. And no end in sight.

Coincidentally, my old friend CIA was in that group, and he presented me with a 100 Countries of Hashing patch that he had been carrying around for almost 2 years. This was actually country 101, I had achieved my 100th in Scotland.

We had a cool hash trail through the city center in Lima, followed by lunch in a little street cafe, and that is where CIA presented me with the patch. Pretty cool day all in all. Many thanks to CIA, and the Lima H3 for the great hashpatality. On On

Busy day today, ran with the Mount Vernon H3 at 10 am. Was a nice 5+ mile trail up around the Sterling / Reston, Virginia area. Only about 15 hashers on hand, but we had a good time catching up with old friends. I ran with them last year when I passed through.

Then I had an hour + drive over towards Annapolis, Maryland for a trail with the DC Men's H3. I had not been able to catch up with them since 2006, so was good to see a few old friends, and make a few new ones. The day started out warm and sunny, but while I was driving over, a storm rolled in. Temps dropped about 20 degrees, and it rained on us for most of the afternoon, but still a good time. Trail was all shiggy, so great time.

Show up, have a few drinks, finally start trail, most of the pack are walkers. 3.5 miles trail, with a shot stop at one mile, then a beer stop at 2 miles, along with standing around for 30 minutes, then on out again. Shot stop at mile 3, and then on in. They knew a lot of down down songs, but are easily distracted, lots of talking in circle, and everyone is happy. Good circle, lots of nice hashers, fun time.Read more
