    Catching Up

    2022 has started out with a bang, and have already run 6 hash trails, and hared 3 of them. Had a Jolly Roger H3 1 Jan hangover trail in the morning, then drove across the state to hash with the Other Orlando H3 that afternoon. The next day I was down in Sarasota to hash with the Circus H3. I hared for Jolly Roger H3 on 5 Jan, then for the St Pete H3 on 7 Jan, and for the Tampa Bay H3 on 8 Jan. Time is zipping right along, as I fill my otherwise free time with helping coordinate the InterAmericas' Hash in Colombia, and several other hash related activities. Life in Retirement is pretty busy.Lue lisää

    Jolly Roger Pirate Invasion Hash Cruise

    Headed out for an 8 days on the high seas of the Caribbean. The annual Jolly Roger H3 hash cruise includes a prelube hash on 21 Jan in Miami, then 8 days at sea with port calls in Aruba, Bonaire, and two stops in the Dominican Republic. Great times with good friends. We had 45 hashers onboard, and a few local hashers joined in at a couple port calls.Lue lisää

    Pirate Invasion Hash - Aruba

    Jolly Roger Pirate Invasion H3 – Aruba 2022

    We scored our first Island Invasion hash, as the blood thirsty pack of 45 found their way off the boat and into the awaiting bus. Driving over to the west coast, the pack was soon standing tall and ready to rape and pillage their way through the ritzy beach front property on their way to finding the ill gotten booty. Our hares, Ivanna Hairy Buttchug & Indiana Bones And The Temple Of Poon, conducted a short chalk talk, and then scampered off into the sand.

    Meanwhile, the pack conducted the usual introductory blather, along with some warm up frolicking about, and we were soon off in pursuit. The first mile was straight through the lounging quests lying about in their fancy hotel beach chairs, the pack whooped and hollered and eventually found the beer check at the Pelican Beach Bar. After a quick splash of island beer, the pack was off again through the streets. Drawing more attention from the local tourist population, we eventually hooked down along a sandy path, and found the hares waiting with more beer, at the base of a observation tower. The hares split up at this point, one runners trail, and one for the walkers, we continued down the coast passing the romantic spot where the hares got engaged several years ago . . . awwwww, and their still married. 😊 (at least that is their story, never can be too sure).

    The trails merged for the last half mile stretch into the beach front paradise we called the on home, where a trash bag full of beer awaited the parched pack. Inflate-a-date executed (no, not that kind of pirate activity), a jovial circle with many down downs, before sending them all into the warm tropical waters. With the pack fully sated with beer, and sunshine, it was back on the bus for the ride back to our pirate ship. Well done to our hares, for the fun trail and tour down memory lane.     Bonaire Flamingo H3

    Bonaire Flamingo H3 & Jolly Roger Pirate Invasion H3 – Bonaire 2022

    Another island, another great day to be hashing. Our hares Where Do You Get Off!?!? (BFH3) and Hazukashii (JRH3) teamed up to help the pack develop a thirst, and then quench that thirst in beer. It was a 10 am boat time / 11 am Bonaire time hares away, and the pack was soon in hot pursuit. WDYGO!?!? is a local brew master, so about one mile into trail including a section on the beach, the runners found a beer check at his home (the walkers got a short cut).

    After a we bit of golden nectar, the pack was once again hot on the trail. The second half of trail was much more shiggy laden, and even passed a large pond with some of these namesake Flamingos wetting themselves, as the pack made their way around town. After a couple more miles of dirt and mud, BN was spied on the pavement, and the pack was on into a large parking lot, where we headed straight to the waiting kegs of frothy suds. WDYGO!?!? performed a magical circle that entertained the pirates for nearly an hour.

    But was that good enough for us, HECK NO . . . we wandered back towards the boat, but soon found a pub nearby to swill a few more local malted beverages before swinging back on board for our 3 pm departure (boat time that is) D) Many thanks to our hosts from the Bonaire Flamingo H3 . . . WDYGO!?!? and his wife, and Madam Flash for their hashpatality. Next stop . . . the Dominican Republic, and more trail.    Lue lisää

    Pirate Invasion Hash - La Romana, DR

    Jolly Roger Pirate Invasion H3 – La Romana (DR)

    The Pirate cruise had never been to this port, so it was new for all of us. The question I got most was how did you figure out the trail? Well, we hit the port at 1130, and I was off and on my way. I had done a Google maps recce a couple weeks in advance, and looking at the first map, you can see the target area I figured would be good hashing territory.

    The second map shows where I was able to scout upon arrival. Point A is where the first guard told me I could not go left (north), I could only go right. Point B is where another guard told me . . . no go brother, can’t go this way. So my only choice at this point was to go the other way, so I snuck behind the first guard, and went north anyway. Point C is as far north along the railroad tracks as I got, when I determined the trail was going to be too long if I went up into the originally projected area, so turned back and headed west and into town, hoping there was something interesting to hash through. Passing a dozen hashers on the bridge, who were out for lunch, I just took the first right and hoped for the best. Finding a stairway down to the river, trail was able to get in some interesting alleyways, before finding its way back up to the main town area. Working my way north again, and reaching point D, there was nothing interesting up there, just solid city blocks. Heading south again, I found a couple parks to run through, and passed the hashers I saw on the bridge, in a restaurant. Passing just 5 feet away from them, they never saw me on the street, so all was well. Trail then took the only possible route to get back to the ship, which was back across the bridge, and then turn right into the port area.    Lue lisää

    Pirate Invasion Hash - Amber Cove, DR

    Jolly Roger Pirate Invasion H3 – Amber Cove (DR)

    It was our final stop, and all eyes were on our hares . . . Feels Up Screams, Math Sucks, Skeletwhore, and Just Alex as we pulled into Amber Cove (our second stop in the Dominican Republic). We waited patiently for the appointed time to arrive, and we all gathered round. Blow and Go was RA for the day, and sent the hares off in a cloud of flour and ankles akimbo. Trail snaked its way along the path (stay on the path damnit), and out onto the main road.

    The turkeys went left, and the runners went right and on down the way, turned right again and headed towards the beach. At this point is when Lifa found the check back from hell, which consumed him . . . and it appears most of the pack for some time. One highly intelligent hasher turned left at this point, and found true trail. Hollering back to the pack, Wet Muscle started to follow, and then for some totally unknown reason turned around and went back to play on the back check for another 20 minutes. The highly intelligent hasher, thinking the rest of the pack was just behind him and would soon be catching up, continued on down the old dirt road.

    Come to find out, Wet Muscle later stated, she DID NOT TRUST the highly intelligent hasher . . . WTF?!?!?! While the rest of the pack played around looking for trail, that one hasher made his way all the way back to the port, where the trails merged and made their way down to the beach, just across the bay from the boat. Copious amounts of beer were sipped, with great anticipation of the circle to be had.

    Once the pack straggled in, Blow and Go took over again, and passed out the down downs . . . UNTIL . . . Inflate-a-date stepped into circle, and pausing several times considering how he was going speak, what words to use (which I am sure he had juggled around in his mind for months) . . . he finally just spoke from the heart, and with the Grease theme playing in all our minds (You’re the one that I want, whooo whooo whooo) . . . he took one knee in front of Feels Up Screams, with a small box containing a big rock . . . and in a sheepish voice proclaimed . . . I brought a cooler, can you make me a sammich babe . . . NO, he proudly exclaimed WILL YOU MARRY ME? Then it was all Love Boat theme . . . Awww, love is in the air, do do do, DODO dodo. Love is in the air . . . CONGRATS to the two lovebirds.

    As they staggered off to the corner to copulate, the rest of the pack either jumped in the bay, or gathered round to sing some hash songs. And then that time finally arrived, it was time to get back on the boat to make the final sail back to Miami . . . and it was Tiny Tim at the end of the Christmas Carol . . . God Bless Us One and All.

    But that is not the end of the story, there are still some goofy shit to take place on our last day at sea . . . See you there, On On.    Lue lisää

    Only 2 trails this past week

    I have another 3 weeks or so here in Florida, before making the next big move. Got in a trail with the Jolly Roger H3 on Wednesday, and then hared for Sarasota Circus H3 yesterday. Still getting a lot of miles in walking in between.

    Sometime in the middle of March, looking to head over to Ethiopia and UAE for events, and hit a couple other countries along the way . . . Qatar, Lebanon, and maybe others.    Lue lisää

    Another week here in Tampa, and 3 more hash trails. Did get in a couple long walks, and our team won the weekly Trivia contest on Monday. About 23 miles of exercise, and we pulled down $30 in future beer money.Lue lisää

    Headed off to hash in another new country. Easy flight via Houston, but had some long lines at immigration to get in. Dude in front of me kept trying to create space for himself by leaving his suitcase to block the row, but still had people 2 feet away from himself to the left and right. Finally got out of the airport, had an interesting shuffle trying to get an Uber, so finally just grabbed a cab and off we went into the city. Hotel here is nice, then walked up to meet the pack for a hash social. Great time chatting and wandering around.Lue lisää

    Short but fun trail on the outskirts of the city. Trail was less than a mile, but fully shiggy. I had to run it 4 times to get 3 miles in, but worth it. Twice forwards, then once backwards to get a different view, then one time with variations on other paths. Good fun, they asked me to RA the circle, which I reluctantly agreed, but it turned out very well. Then we had a BBQ, and chatted.Lue lisää

    First day in Dubai, and already found a hash to run. The Creek H3 is celebrating their 2000th run this weekend, which has been postponed twice from 2020, to 2021, and finally to be executed this weekend. Going back 2 years, I had been signed up to attend as I was making my way through the Middle East just prior to COVID. Having been the only international visitor to get into Bahrain for INTERGULF 2020, I was due to fly out to Dubai the next weekend . . . then all the flights were shut down pretty much worldwide. I ended up spending a very interesting month in Bahrain, followed by the longest single day commercial flight itinerary in recorded history.

    I departed Bahrain at 0130 on 13 April for the first leg to Paris. CDG was nearly empty, with no services open, so sat and waited for the second leg from Paris to Los Angeles. We had 20 people on a Boeing 777 for this 14+ hour flight. Thirty minutes after takeoff, the pilot announced that we were all invited to the Business Class section for the remainder of the flight. Very thankful for that, we had beds, movies, and free food and drink. Arriving in LAX, there were a few services open (this is still 13 April mind you), and after a bit of a layover, I was on my third and final leg out to Honolulu. Arriving in the early evening, I managed to complete a 32 hour travel plan all in one calendar day, flying backwards in time.

    I had been on the world tour for 6 months at that point, and had already purchased tickets to the UAE, Qatar, Lebanon, Azerbaijan, Scotland, and Trinidad that were all lost due to being booked on a wide variety of airlines and agents (some hotel bookings and car rentals were able to be cancelled, but still lost about $2500). Last year I was able to get to Azerbaijan and Scotland, this year I have now hashed in the UAE, Qatar next week, and Trinidad next month . . . that only leaves Lebanon to tackle at some point in the future to clean up that original loss. Can’t complain, life is grand.

    So, that brings me to Dubai, and the finally taking place Creek H3 2000th Run weekend. It was almost a miss, as I had to execute a rapid passport renewal as all my pages were full, and got my new passport 24 hours before heading to the airport for this trip. We had 22 hashers on last night’s trail (the Creek H3 #2084 was the regular weekly hash, run on the outskirts of Dubai (Sharjah), listed as the 7th fastest growing city in the world (you can see in the pictures that the trail we ran last night will be consumed by construction in the next few weeks).

    As they have done for decades, the trail was mostly marked with orange painted straws stuck into the sand. Checks are spray painted on rocks, along with the false trail markings. We had an enjoyable 6 Kms trail with the world’s tallest building hovering in the distance. Circle lasted longer than the trail, but it was great fun, and seeing old friends Ratshit and Likk’mm, while meeting many new friends. All in all, a great day, then the jetlag set in, and after a shower I was off to laalaa land for some much needed sleep.

    The weekend is just beginning, we have events planned for Friday evening, main event Saturday, survivors run on Sunday, and a final run with the Desert H3 on Monday . . . then off to Doha. Life is good.    Lue lisää

    Seeing the Sights in Dubai

    Urban Hiking in Dubai . . . I did not anticipate walking that far, but once you're in the groove, go for it.

    Catching up with the HHH in Doha, Qatar

    Back to back hash trails in Doha this week, running with the Doha H3 on Wednesday and the Nightcrawlers on Thursday. Ramadan begins on Saturday, so plans for each of the two trails got curtailed at the last moment, but we had a great time none the less. Trail on Wednesday had us running around Dildo Dan’s neighborhood, with the on-in and circle on his lanai, followed by dinner at a local Sri Lankan restaurant. For the Thursday Nightcrawler’s trail, Dildo offered me the opportunity to join him setting trail. Not often do I get the chance to just be a mule for another lead hare, and set falsies, so it was an easy effort. An excellent plan was executed to make it up as we go. We finished setting trail just in time to meet the pack of about 30. Sending them off on trail, we then ran along with them as they scurried along through the streets of central Doha. As with many big cities, there was lots of construction . . . and traffic. Trail was about 5 kms of pavement, but we did manage to find some alleyways, a parking garage, with a small park or two, and the on home through a massive construction site. We did not linger outside, but went straight up into the Red Lion Pub that serves a wide verity of international beers. Throw in a burger or a plate of nachos, and the entire pack was happy. A great night with great hashers, and fun times in Qatar.Lue lisää

    Seeing the Sights in Doha

    Having a great time in Doha, Qatar. After a couple days of hashing, I was invited to join several hashers for a BBQ on the beach up north of the city. Watched the very shallow tide of Arabian Gulf roll in while enjoying several cuts of meat.

    Then on Saturday evening, we enjoyed a fabulous Yemenis’ dinner in Souq Waqif. The Souq is full of FIFA World Cup exhibits, and the whole city was full of lights. Made for a great sightseeing wander.

    Was on my way to the airport today, and picked up my COVID test . . . and alas, after 2 years and 23 countries of clear sailing, I popped positive. I never would have known if I was not flying out. No symptoms, feel great, but now in quarantine until I get a negative test. Must be a new strain . . . and hopefully will not last long. Only two weeks until heading to the Caribbean, so better pass quickly.    Lue lisää

    Quarantined for a week in Doha

    On my checklist to fly back to the US on 4 Apr, I had to get a COVID test. I got a PCR on 2 Apr, and then back to my hotel to get a good night's sleep before packing and heading to the airport for my 1 AM departure on the 4th. Well, on my way to the airport, I went back to get my results and BOOOOM . . . popped positive. No symptoms, so was a bit shocked. Then had to scramble to find an authorized hotel to quarantine for 7 days. During my isolation, I did have some symptoms for a day or two, but very mild. I tested again on day 7, got a negative result, and booked the first flight out to the US. Flew for 20 hours on 10 April, and now getting ready for the Prelube Cruise and follow on to Trinidad for OUTERHASH.Lue lisää

    Barbados H3 #2077

    Getting in a send off trail here in Barbados, before we sail out on the pre-lube cruise to OUTERHASH 2022. We have about 50 hashers gathered for a week long excursion hitting six islands over the next week . . . Grenada, St Kitts, Antigua, St Vincent, Dominica, and St Lucia, then returning to Barbados. Then we fly over to Trinidad next week for 7 more trails.

    The Barbados H3 was very interesting. We had an awesome 7.5 mile trail with an excellent mixture of dirt trails, grassy parks, and city streets, with a long on in through Sugar Cane fields. You pay 2 Barbados dollars ($1 US) for the joy of the trail, then buy your beers at the end from the beer meister. In circle, there is no signing, and you don’t drink beer. You get a shot (1/2 ounce) of a blue liquor . . . that has had a Scotch Bonnet pepper soaked in, making it VERY spicy. You do your shot on your knees, and all first time visitors are simply . . . virgins. Great fun here in the islands, and we are ready to take on more.    Lue lisää

    Grenada H3 #1187.5

    We had about 25 hashers off the ship, joined by another dozen on island, for the special Easter Monday hash that the Grenada H3 hosted just for us. It was slightly overcast, but humid, and it did drizzle a bit while we were on trail. After locating the prearranged busses, we had a 20 minute ride out to the run site.

    This awesome trail came in two parts, a lower section that was a bit flatter, but with a dozen or more water crossings . . . and an upper half for the bold runners, that was mostly uphill, with a short and somewhat steep downhill section at the end. Each loop was just over 2 miles, and as the FRB I managed to finish both loops (4.5 miles) in just under 2 hours.

    Soaking wet with drizzle and sweat, the beer tasted so good at the end. Mu-sick and Thar She Blows even joined us as they sail around Grenada for a few days prior to meeting us all in Trinidad. Little Shit from Aberdeen was the RA for the day, assisted by some of the local hashers, with beer flying in all directions. A great day of fun with several songs on the bus ride back to the ship.     St Kitts H3 #448

    St Kitts H3 normally runs every third Saturday, but they graciously hosted a trail for our hash cruise once again, this time on a Tuesday. Trail was pretty much a straight shot from the port to the beach, 3.5 miles away. The two previous trails I have run here had lots of off road fun, but this one was no monkey business . . . just pavement taking us to a beach bar, where we had plenty of entertainment.

    Circle was an interesting mixture of jokes and songs, followed by some DJ music dancing. It was a nice sunny day, and we all enjoyed some beach time. Another great adventure on our week long journey around the Caribbean. Many thanks to Cunta-Kinte and De Ninja for setting trail, and all the other St Kitts hashers for coming out to join us.     Antigua H3 #819

    Another lovely day on another lovely island paradise. Our pack of hounds continues on its trek through the Caribbean. The Antigua H3 was very gracious in hosting us for a 7 km hash run through St Johns’ for a cultural tour of the capital city.

    We stopped at a few of the famous places like St Johns’ Church, the Antigua Recreation Ground (cricket pitch), public library, the hospital, an old drainage ditch, the fish market, and the meat market . . . with the on in back down to the port where over 100 beers were cooling off, ready for mass consumption. It was another great day. Many thanks to the hares, and the other hashers of the Antigua H3 for showing us around and entertaining us.    Lue lisää
