Did you know that tipping is not the norm in Europe like it is here in the US? The best place to get money exchanged is from the ATMs when you land? I had no idea until I started looking and investigating European travel lifehacks. As a closet researcher, I am always seeking out the best way to have the most out of an experience. The more I know, the better I feel. So I have to make sure I ask for tap water or they will give me bottled water at the restaurants. Oh, and the electrical plug adapter for England will not work in the rest of Europe. Not to mention if there is a commotion or jostle around me to watch my belongings very closely, as it could just be a set-up distraction for pickpockets to clean out the tourists. Also, I never knew that a little bit of static electricity can zap my camera memory cards clean with no hope of recovery. Apparently there are SD card holders with anti-static lining that combat this horror. Who knew?Read more

Ahhh, we have made it to our first place of rest and it has been a day! The most exciting (not so much) part was the driving experience here...very narrow lanes, opposite side of road, steering wheel on opposite side too...not to mention the roundabouts! I think we're getting the hang of it though. My job is to navigate and Stefan's job is to get us the safely. He's done an excellent job!Read more

Dinner is served! After a fun and interesting day learning about mesotherapy and CO2 injections, we made our way to downtown Dorking. Côtes Restaurant was recommended to is by the locals at the corner store and WOW! For appetizer, we shared the best bowl of French onion soup. Then we had spinach mushroom crepes and half of a braised chicken. The most amazing portion of the meal was the dessert: Creme Caramel and ice cream with dark chocolate syrup. To die for!Read more

It was logical to assume the men's restroom would be the door next to the women's, but no that door led to a storage closet. When he was shown the men's restroom door, this is what he encountered: a stairwell that felt like it reached to sky. That was how you got to the men's toilet....very interesting.Read more

After a slight mishap with a dirt (muddy) road, which we thought was the way to Stonehenge, where we were confronted by a freezing cold rain shower, a raven, and then a rainbow over the stones, we finally made it...whew!Read more

I suppose British think walking down the street to the cafe for some evening tea is no big deal. Make a right here, turn left there and tada! Oh but wait, we are Americans and a nice walk for us is WAY shorter than the directions we have been given from both sets of hosts. The first time was in the village of West Horsley...yeah, we turned back around after a half - hour walking and was no where near the pub we were directed to for dinner. We were starving, it was pitch black, run our of sidewalk and street lights and went back without our supper that night. This evening in Bristol, after arriving 2 hrs later than expected due to the awful/scary/narrow lanes in rush hour traffic, we were once again directed a right here, left there and again no tada! It was a LONG way, like 2 miles through back alleys and over walking bridges, before we reached our destination for tea.
Yet tea we did enjoy!

Bristol Exploration

We set off to find the Bristol Cathedral and a few other things before heading to Bath. While in the posh Clifton neighborhood, we accidentally came across other amazing sites. First being the Clifton Suspension Bridge. We also discovered St. Anne's church, which was better than the cathedral.Read more

What a lovely town! Even though the traffic is awful, the architecture and history are wonderful. We happened upon a Christmas Market at the center near the Roman bathhouse, with street vendors and performers. The Bath Church Abbey was a classic Gothic structure...a great day!Read more

Made it on time to pick up Fatin and Firas at the London Heathrow Airport....enjoyed an amazing Sticky Toffee Latte! Then we drove to my AirBnB place in West Ham to drop my luggage off. We put the address in the GPS and it took us to the wrong "Old Street" so we had to pay a London Congestion fee... £11.50! All because we drove thru the center area of London. The fee is to discouraged automobiles apparently. The coolest part was accidentally diving by Harley St. where Stefan lived when he worked in London as a young man.Read more

Before They Go...

Stefan, Firas, and Fatin head to Israel on Saturday but before they go we hit the town. Passed by West Ham soccer club on our way to the Tube near the place I am staying. Then went to Trafalgar Square. Firas taught me the proper way to say 'Trafalgar'. We saw street performers breathing fire and The Homeless Bard (THB) putting his prose on the sidewalk in chalk...found a Whole Foods Market on the West End for dinner. Amazing food, amazing time, with amazing peeps!Read more

My first lone day

I thought it best to be a proper London tourist my first day on my own....so I did what any respectable tourist would do and joined a tour bus guide throughout the city. To get the lay of the land, you see. And it was so fun and I had a visual on what was where, allowed me to make a better informed plan of attack...While on the top of the two decker bus I did a lot of ppl watching too :)Read more

When evening started, I decided to hop off the tour bus and go to the Florence Nightingale Museum at St. Thomas Hospital. Was a lovely, family friendly display. Did you know she had a pet owl named, Athena? The beautiful pic of big Ben was taken at sunset close to the museum.Read more

So apparently the second weekend of December calls for a London Santa Run. Lots of ppl dress in Santa clothes and come from all corners of London to the center to raise funds for a charity. I happened to catch some of it as my day drew to a close. Then enjoyed a nice dinner at Pizza Express with dessert & tea.Read more
