• The Merry Cemetery of Sapanta

    August 19 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

This little cemetery in the small town of Sapanta is famous because a local wood carver started making tombstones for everyone in the village who died. They are intricately carved and colorfully painted. And to top it off, he wrote a little poem for each person.

What's really cool is that the tombstone carving reflects the person's personality or career. I was expecting I might be one of a couple people there but given all the cars and buses, this is a major tourist draw.

The region of Maramures is especially known for its oak forests and wood carvers. As you can see in my other posts, the craftsmanship is amazing.
