Sighishoara

It took 2 hours and 45 minutes to go 57 miles on a regional train. But we knew that going in. Bus and train options are limited in this region, and most tourists are day trippers on tour buses from Brasov.

Sighishoara (SEEGEE show AH ra) is worth a night or two to take in the sights. It's a Saxon hill town and the smallest of the three we've visited. The highlight is the clock tower with its history museum inside. It has a glockenspiel-type mechanical works, but the wooden figures only come out at midnight.

The streets are cobblestone, the ankle-breaker type. Wandering the narrow streets is a joy, especially after the tours are gone. It's incredibly photogenic, and only after we arrived did we notice that our Rough Guide has a picture of the clocktower on the cover.

We'll take a 7 hour train ride to Bucharest tomorrow and explore the sights there. People say it's an ugly city, but if you can peel back a layer or two, it has some nice surprises.
