Road to the alps

  • The road (2)

    20. juli 2024, Schweiz ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Yes. Pretty good day. I wasn’t aware I came through Gstaad. I don’t know why it is a tourist attraction, but it is. A bit busy therefore. Otherwise the Col du Pillon was a road mainly populated by two seaters with prancing horses and motorbikes. Not the quietest cycling road but very doable.
Now I am just south of Aigle on the road to the Grand St. Bernard. Or Passo Gran San Bernardino. It is funny that in Switzerland from one valley to the next people don’t understand German and only speak French.

Oh by the way: Temperature on the road today around 35°C. And I am not even in Italy. Tomorrow rest day. Monday Italy. Looking forward to it.

  • No news today

    21. juli 2024, Schweiz ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Restdays are just that. Do nothing. I varied laying in bed with a short walk through town in between the rainy spells. I got a bit of a view of the mountains I will be heading into tomorrow and realized I times the rest day quite well. Hope the weather improves and holds.Læs mere

  • And up we go

    22. juli 2024, Schweiz ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

There we go again. Into the real mountains now. Starting with the Col de la Forclaz. I overtook a cyclist halfway up the climb. You know, one without luggage on the bike… well, I guess it says more about him then about me. I think his gearing was a bit off. Anyway, he tried to catch up by the end of the climb, so I actually put an effort in so he wouldn’t catch me, haha. Still a bit of competitativeness in there somewhere 😊Læs mere

  • Mt. Blanc is quite white

    22. juli 2024, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Somewhere over there the Mt, Blanc is hiding.
Just got over the Col du Montets and now it is downhill to Chamonix. I am pretty much riding straight towards the Mt. Blanc, but the peak has been covered by clouds. Every now and then some of the peaks of the Massif du Mt. Blanc show themselves.
It is quite an entertaining spectacle.

  • Why

    23. juli 2024, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

I have been overtaken by approximately €100.000,- worth of bikes and I am wondering why people want to go up here. Well, I did too, but I seriously doubt my sanity.
Especially with all the gear I carry, it is really hard and takes really long. Even at a steady pace the last 5km everything hurts. In an unpleasant way.Læs mere

  • I found a bit of Norway today

    24. juli 2024, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Funny how quickly a landscape can change.
When I came down the Madeleine yesterday, the valley was boring, industrial and stank (France stinks anyway with seemingly everybody driving old diesels).
Today at the beginning it was all tarmac and concrete in the valley surrounded by nice mountains, but then suddenly it changed into something that reminded me of Norway. Quite a bit hotter and with cows instead of reindeer, but the scenery was beautiful

  • The highest

    24. juli 2024, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Contrary to what some people believe the Col d’Iseran actually is the highest paved mountain pass in Europe. And I went over it 💪🏻.
This falls in the category “Why” again, but I do like my extremes. I’ve been to the most Northern point of Europes mainland, the most westerly point (although not by bike), the highest road and crossed the Arctic circle with all thinkable modes of transportation.

I don’t need to be the first, the fastest, the youngest or oldest, but I like to explore the extremities of Europe.

  • We meet again

    25. juli 2024, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I almost completed a full lap around the Mont Blanc. From the Petit St. Bernard I could finally see the top again. No clouds this time.

  • Destination

    25. juli 2024, Italien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

That’s that. I’ve cycled through Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Switzerland en finished in Italy. A little over 1300km and 16.000m of climbing.
Very enjoyable. Not every single km, but most of them. I’ve seen beautiful places and ugly ones. I’ve climbed a few very nice mountain roads. As a matter of fact the suffering itself was enjoyable even (Maybe the Col de la Madeleine was just 4km too long). I’ve learned stuff. One: I will get up there, no matter what.
Two: this bike is so damn stable on descents that even motor bikes couldn’t keep up with me when it got twisty (don’t tell my wife 😉).

    Thanks for watching.
    Till the next one 👋🏼
