Little Mermaid and Fortress

Firstly, it was flipping cold today and was snowing for a bit. Not enough for a snowman though. Wanted to see a lot of the sights today.

First stop on my busy sightseeing day was the famous but famously disappointing little mermaid statue. It rounds out me visiting the top 3 most disappointing sight in the world according to Japanese people.

Then went into the fortress which is still used by the military apparently, also has a military windmill protected by cannons that you're not allowed to touch.Read more

Nyhavn

Next was Nyhavn which is the famous canal with colourful houses either side. It's a pretty place and was quiet at that time of morning. I also stopped taking pictures of myself after this place.

Christiansborg Palace

Visited the palace next which was all snowy. First stop was the ruins under the palace of all the previous castles and palaces. It was cool to see the different layers built in to of each other, and logs being used as pipes, with metal bits passing the water between the logs.Read more

Christiansborg Palace Reception rooms

Then went into the fancy rooms of the palace that the queen uses when entertaining.

Got to learn more about their history including one king who went crazy, his physician took control, also took his wife, had a child, then got booted out, but the child then had a child who ended up marrying a later king. Nuts.

Highlight was the Great hall and the really cool tapestries that go through the history of Denmark.

Also climbed a tower because I like being high.Read more

Round Tower and food

Then I went up another tower, a round tower with a 'staircase' for horses, so they can enjoy the view too.
Also a working observatory (closed).

Then headed back to Nyhavn to grab some food and a strawberry hot chocolate. I'm not one for hot drinks but my hands needed warming up.Read more

Opera!

Was considering relaxing in the evening but felt like I should do something, so I went to the opera to watch Turandot. It was in Italian, with Danish subtitles, so I had to read the storyline before hand.

It was good, enjoyed it... the ending though... It didn't follow the Wikipedia ending. It ended with lots of people killing themselves that shouldn't have and then a flipping unicorn walking on stage and then the curtain fell... I have no idea...Read more

National Museum

Woke up today to more snow, it looked very pretty walking around the centre.

Headed to the National museum to learn more about the Danish. There was lots there and could have probably spend all day.

Learnt about the journey of the sun from the fish to the morning ship and the sun horse over to the afternoon ship and the snake through the underworld. All goes on around the flat earth we live on. Someone must have made all that up at some point.

Was also interesting reading about things happening like farming, the Greeks, Romans, there were others too. All it said was this happened elsewhere in Europe, Denmark didn't.Read more

Rosenborg Castle

Next was Rosenborg castle which was very cool in the snow. The inside wasn't really in my style, if I was going to live in a castle, I wouldn't decorate it like they did. Top floor was good though, one big room pretty much, that was really nice.Read more

Treasury

The main reason for visiting Rosenborg was to see the treasury including the crowns.

The crowns were very cool and shiny. I preferred the older crown, if I was going to wear one in my castle. There were lots more jewels and gold but my favourite was the ship. It was made from ivory (I know boo!) and silver, but it was a ship and it had so much detail. I want it.Read more

Helsingør

Travelled to Helsingør today to see a couple of things. Was a bit windy near the sea and it was sleeting.

They have their own shiny and manly little mermaid, also a fish made from rubbish found in the sea I guess.Read more

Kronborg Castle

The main reason to come here was to see Kronborg castle. It's basically another palace where the royals of Denmark used to hang out. Also probably the castle from Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Most of the nice stuff was stolen by the Swedish apparently, also the tower was closed due to "safety" reasons or something, you can imagine how disappointed I was. I wasn't disappointed with the cellars though, they were really dark and lit very lightly with paraffin lamps. It was spooky, a lot darker than the photos make it look. Also Holger Danske a Danish hero sleeps there until Denmark is threatened by enemies, he'll then wake-up and grab his sword.Read more

Maritme Museum

Last stop was the maritime museum. It covered a lot of stuff including trade, life of a sailor, how to navigate, the girls in every port, and war.

Best bits were the interactive trading games, the first was old school and you took a book and bought things and walked to the next port to sell them, I seemed to go skint playing that. The other trading game though I kicked those kids butts and got 4th highest score of the day. The three above me were probably adults with degrees in ship trading.Read more
