Day 1 - Arrival to Bogotá

    September 2, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Sexy avianca uniforms, two movies, catnap and a very smooth landing. People around are whispering that this new Airbus A330 is super fast, that's why we have arrived 1 hour earlier. Ordered a cab from the airport (using Revolut for the first time here - awesome!) and after a looong search for the destination address we're finally here.
    4:00 AM. +9 C.
We are visiting one of Cristina's best friends and she has a wild wild cat la Gorda. La Gorda loves playing with boxes, bags, shoes and new guests. No sleeping guaranteed..

Fifteen step on Christ dead and resurrection
Had the opportunity to experience the miners life: half an hour of walking in darkness, following only ropes, walking on uneven floor with limited ventilation. The reward? A couple of salt cristals

  • Montenegro & Salento, Colombia

    September 9, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Sept, 9 – Valle to Quindio

We decided to drive to el Eje Cafetero, an important place located near the mountains of Cordillera Central where coffee is the main topic.

The drive from Cali to Montenegro is amazingly nice: good weather and very good roads of three lines. Mountains are closer and bigger and more beautiful than I could remember and Marty could imagine. Green full of trees and palms surrounding rivers and farms. We stayed in La Tata, a nice hotel built and kept as the old farms of coffee farmers. After frijoles with chorizo (beans) my dad insisted to rent a Jeep to drive to Valle del Cocora in Salento. Amazing view with tinto and new ponchos due to sudden cold weather.

Next day we visited el Parque del Café where we learnt a thing or two about coffee. I saw one of the most beautiful Colombian dances I can remember. Crying was expected, but very nice!

Thermal swimming pool…have you seen a pack of cigarettes? Ok, that’s the best to describe the experience. Three swimming pools full of very hot water coming from Volcano Nevado del Ruiz. Very healthy way to relax your muscles just not a good idea to visit on a Saturday night when all local people meet to drink and relax.

  • Barrio El Peñón

    September 18, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    Sept, 6 – Cali

Barrio El Penon: Very traditional houses together with new buildings for restaurants and hotels. Nice walk after 6 PM due to winds refreshing the city. Big park El penon where old guys sit to talk about the world.

Barrio Granada: One of the neighbourhood with more designer boutiques and restaurants in  the city. Old and new combined in each street. Solsticio Restaurant is the place where we met our friends to watch an important match for Russian World Cup: Colombia vs. Brasil. We lost but surprisingly nobody seems to care too much after at least 5 Pokers and Club Colombias (local beers).

  • Barrio San Antonio & Cali river

    September 18, 2016 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    Sept, 7 – Cali

Barrio San Antonio: Bohemian neighbourhood with hills on every street. Old colonial houses now refurnished for Hostals, restaurants and tourist places. Slow walk around the little old church Iglesia de San Antonio next to the sister convent where Cris used to buy handmade cookies by sisters that could never leave the convent. Amazing view of the city from this hills. It is a shame is early in the morning, darkness, moon and lights at night bring a different atmosphere. We walked up and down through the streets to find nice hostals and eco-tourism agencies.

Blue – Pacific Coast Food: Amazing jaibas filled with rice in coconut cream, maduros (ripe plantains) and cheese plus Arroz con Tollo (rice with shark) served with Aguadepanela con limón (lemonade sweetened with something like brown sugar). We ate listening tambores from the Pacific.

Walk on the Riviera Rio Cali; We visited el Gato de Tejadita (Cat by Tejadita). Is a sculpture made from one of Cris favourite artists from Cali. The city created more cat sculptures based on this one donated by the artist. Visited Museo la Tertulia and enjoyed old bid trees on its back.
