I had similar thoughts when I was in Java, a lot of these cities would be really interesting for tourists with a bit of investment. I remember in Semarang they had all these historic Dutch buildings and canals, a bit like a mini Amsterdam, but there weren’t any real museums or signage and a number of the buildings were quite run down. Traveler Indonesia relies on Bali for tourist dollars but the numbers are killing the place. If they put a bit of effort in improving other places it would potentially take the pressure off Bali and spread the dollars around.
