      Ijen Crater

      November 7, 2023 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

After a short sleep, we were back on the bus, heading towards the volcano. 30 minutes later, we arrived at base camp, where we were fitted out with a gas mask, torch, gloves, and jacket. The trek was only 2km's, but we gained 600m in altitude in that 2kms, with most of the 600m being in the middle section. Once at the top, we put on our masks, gloves, and jackets before starting our descent into the crater. This was a challenging descent with sheer faces, a narrow path, and very little light. Once at the bottom, we approached the area where the blue flames were burning. This was absolutely beautiful, but the plooms of smoke, which intermittently belched from the ground, were horrible. The smoke smelt terrible, stung my eyes, and bought visibility down to zero. After a while, we moved further around the crater where we were able to see the acid lake as the sun rose. We then made our way up to where the miners dig the sulphur from the ground. After that, we climbed up out of the crater and made our way back to base camp. We then went to a little house for breakfast before starting our trip back to Bali.
I arrived back at my hotel at 4 pm, immediately having a swim, then going for a massage and dinner. By 8pm, I was back in my hotel.
Note: There was the option of taking a taxi up to the crater and then back down, but not a taxi as we know it. The taxis were 2 wheel carts that you sit in as a man pulls you up the mountain. See the pictures.
