    St. John's to St Bega's

    April 23, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

This was supposed to be a nice easy 10k warm up to prepare for the Camino. Bit blustery at the start but warm with the odd burst of sunshine.

The walk from St John's to St Bega's went well with just the one sheep chasing me !

I didn't bother with the drag up to Mirehouse but chose to join the path that runs parallel to the road. When I'd last done this walk we'd ended up doing half a mile on the road. Didn't fancy repeating that so I followed the path up round the back of the Ravenstone hotel. It went well until I made the decision to visit Ling How.

Huge mistake. My sailing had introduced the topic of catabatic winds, but I'd never been up again them before. As soon as I got to the leeward side of the Watches I was almost knocked off my feet intense wind pressure and unrelenting. Its these winds which make Bass such a great sailing venue.

The wins relented once I'd reached the dussued quarry. After that it was easy walking via Barkbeth Hill, High Side House and Walk Mill Bridge.

Allin, a good day out, but it'll be many a day before I venture back into Southerndale

    Walking the Beeching Way

    April 24, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

The plan for the day was to walk round Derwent. A tramp that's served me well when warming up for two previous Caminos. But an early start meant an empty stomach and Gregg's called me.

As I ate my bacon roll, the newly finished tunnel on the old railway line came to mind. Why not. At least once I'd found the line it would be easy navigation

I'd no real idea where to pick the line up until I saw people walking on one of the old bridges near the Twa Dogs pub. I slipped onto it by the side of Forge Lane.

As it was still early it was fairly quiet. For the first hour I had the company of a few dog walkers and the odd cyclist silently hurtling past me. A "ting" from a bell would have been courteous.

As I reached the Threlkeld Mining museum I'd had enough, so made a turn for home. The crowds were out by now. On the run in I walked all the way back into Keswick ending at what would have been the old railway station

Overall, an easy walk through nice scenery BUT. I was reminded why I'd said I'd never walk any length on a cycle or canal tow path again there's no variation to your stride at all and eventually that begins to tell as legs and groin begin to ache
