• St. John's to St Bega's

    23 April 2022, England ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

This was supposed to be a nice easy 10k warm up to prepare for the Camino. Bit blustery at the start but warm with the odd burst of sunshine.

The walk from St John's to St Bega's went well with just the one sheep chasing me !

I didn't bother with the drag up to Mirehouse but chose to join the path that runs parallel to the road. When I'd last done this walk we'd ended up doing half a mile on the road. Didn't fancy repeating that so I followed the path up round the back of the Ravenstone hotel. It went well until I made the decision to visit Ling How.

Huge mistake. My sailing had introduced the topic of catabatic winds, but I'd never been up again them before. As soon as I got to the leeward side of the Watches I was almost knocked off my feet intense wind pressure and unrelenting. Its these winds which make Bass such a great sailing venue.

The wins relented once I'd reached the dussued quarry. After that it was easy walking via Barkbeth Hill, High Side House and Walk Mill Bridge.

Allin, a good day out, but it'll be many a day before I venture back into Southerndale
