Sauntering

During my work on the farm my students worked towards the John Muir award. This recognised their work, love and improvements made to a place after natural beauty. John Muir was a naturalist from Scotland who went to America and was a founder figure of the National Parks movement. This resulted in the Peak District being founded where Simon and I have done lots of training for our Camino walk.
I found this quote from John Muir recently which I love

John Muir on "hiking": I don't like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not hike! Do you know the origin of that word 'saunter?' It's a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going, they would reply, 'A la sainte terre,' 'To the Holy Land.' And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these Caminos are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not 'hike' through them."Baca lagi

Sturm! Kein Tenderverkehr zum geplanten Hafen möglich! Der Kapitän wählte einen winzigen Fischerort als Alternative, so dass die Ausflüge doch stattfinden konnten. So eine hübsche Insel! Da hätten wir sonst was verpasst.Baca lagi

Waking up to a well earned hang over. We dragged ourselves into something resembling ship shape. For some reason we decided to sail off the anchor. It went well luckily, as we were surrounded by very shallow water. The forecast was for 15 kts Westerly, which was just what the doctor ordered. Unfortunately what the doctor got was South 25kts. Bang on our upwind course. After passing round light house island we hardened onto the wind. Luckily there was another boat for us to race which kept us motivated for the first hour. We changed between jib and Genoa 3 or 4 times and slid between 1 and 2 reefs. Steering was a busy task keeping the boat going fast enough to make progress and high enough that we don’t miss the target. As the day progressed we decide Peel was the target. It was a tricky target with a cill and a small tidal window.
The light was dimming as outer pilotage was needed and it was clear we would not be high enough to sail straight into peel harbour, but would, in fact hit the coast 3 miles east. A very annoying 50 minutes tacking up the coast as the light and the tide left . Luckily for us we just made it over the cill with a bit of keel lifted. Peel harbour was still windy and very tight for a boat like ours with no thrusters.Baca lagi

Der heutige Stopp gilt der Isle of Man direkt im Hafen von Douglas.
Bei herzlichstem Sonnenschein mutete die Stadt mit ihrer begrünten Promenade wie ein Badeort an der Cote d'Azur an.
Neu war für mich, dass hier die Brüder Gibb zur Welt gekommen sind. Dem später als Bee Gees bekannten Trio hat man auf der Promenade eine Bronzestatue gewidmet.
Ein ausgiebiger Spaziergang und vielleicht ein wenig Shopping lohnt sich allemal.
Meinen Mann und mich zog es am Nachmittag zum Douglas Harbor View Point, von dem aus man einen traumhaften Blick auf die ganze Bucht hat. Von da aus sind es nur noch 10 min zu Fuß bis zum Marine Arch.Baca lagi

Snaefell Mountain Railway

Die Snaefell Mountain Railway ist die einzige elektrische Bergbahn auf den Britischen Inseln und eine der letzten verbliebenen Bahnen mit einer Spurweite von 1067 mm (Kapspur) in Europa. Die fünf Meilen lange Linie ist abenteuerlich trassiert, wobei Steigungen von 1 % bis zu 12 % bewältigt werden. Elektrifiziert ist die Bahn mit 550 Volt Gleichstrom. Eine Besonderheit ist die als Bremsschiene nach dem System Fell benutzte Mittelschiene. In Laxey besteht Anschluss an die Manx Electric Railway.

Die Bahn wurde 1895 gegründet und wird heute von der Isle of Man Transport, einem Betrieb der Regierung der Insel Man, betrieben. Da die Spurweite von den übrigen Bahnen auf der Insel Man abweicht, kann das Rollmaterial nicht mit diesen ausgetauscht werden.

Gleich nach der Ausfahrt in Laxey bietet die Bahn einen schönen Ausblick auf das Great Laxey Wheel. Bei der Zwischenstation Bungalow kreuzt der Snaefell Mountain Course, auf dem die Rennen um die Isle of Man TT und den Manx Grand Prix ausgetragen werden, die Bahnstrecke. In direkter Nachbarschaft befindet sich ein Denkmal für den 26-fachen TT-Sieger Joey Dunlop. Früher gab es dort ein Motorradmuseum. Nachdem vor einigen Jahren Asbest im Gebäude gefunden wurde, musste es aber geschlossen werden. Der Besitzer, Peter Murray, hat ein neues Museum in Santon eröffnet.Baca lagi

Wir wurden an der südlichen der kleinen Insel abgesetzt und wandern den Weg entlang, der über die Insel führt.
Wunderschöne Ausblicke, Natur und absolute Ruhe sorgen für einen sehr entspannten Tag.
Drei Caches gibt es zu finden und Fragen zu beantworten.
Von einem Platz aus sieht man alle 4 Leuchttürme auf einmal.Baca lagi

Well here I am.. home!!!
I’ve now been up for 48 hours, with at most 2 hours sleep on the plane 😳

The flight out of Hong Kong was pretty bumpy to start with, possibly due to the Typhoon, but soon settled down and was great the rest of the way to Manchester..
By the time I’d retrieved my bag I just wanted to get home and not wait another 8 hours for the Iom flight.. so….
I checked to see if there was an earlier flight and booked myself on it,! … yep! It could only happen to me.. after paying for another flight, it goes and gets delayed for 2 hours 🙄🙄

On the bright side, I’m now home 😃 having read a 567 page book in under 12 hours… bonus being a Chinese take away tea with Finn and Laura.. happy days…

I’m now desperate for my bed…..Baca lagi

OFF I GO…….

Well here I am off on another solo adventure .. not entirely, I’m off to see Joe for three weeks with a solo 😬 week in Vietnam thrown in the mix.
My first stress is out of the way.. the plane from the IOM to Manchester wasn’t cancelled or even delayed, thank you Loganair 🤩..
having felt so proud that I fitted everything into my rucksack, I was feeling less impressed once I’d arrived at my hotel.. It is SO heavy. I didn’t dare take it off on the bus incase I couldn’t get it back on !!!
Having considered this an achievement I decided I deserved a pint of Guinness as a reward.. as well as booking a meal in the Restaurant as the set price menu looked amazing and I was starving.. .well so far so good.. hopefully the food lives up to my expectations …Baca lagi
