Wanted to see what the true Eatalty market was like in Rome. 3 floors of everything epicurean! Really well merchandised.
Did a little roaming (no pun intended) walked by the Pantheon. They now charge to get in and the line is longgggg….Also amazing there are some ruins in the city ctr. that fenced in. After school met a friend for a drink in Piazza Navona. And dinner at great place Al Chianti. Finally got to try a fried artichoke!Read more

  • A Friday Stroll Sightseeing

    May 5, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

Pictures aren’t necessarily in order. Today was a day to check off a few of those “must see” sites in Roma. The Spanish Steps. The azalea’s are only there from mid April till mid May; they sure add another dimension to this sight. Then on to the Trevi Fountain. Yikes was it packed with tourist! Then to Piazza Venezia and Vittoriano that commands the piazza. I went up to the higher level to take some of these pictures. I have booked a tour to go to the rooftop and a guided tour of the museum. Quite views even from this level. Lastly after class went for a quick aperitivo in piazza Navona and stop into this church where a well known violinist was to play but wasn’t sure if was going to make it as it was 30 min. past the time on a sign. Tomorrow I explore the neighborhood of Monti. Ciao!Read more

  • Saturday’s adventures in Monti

    May 7, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Sorry pictures don’t necessarily post in correct order.

    Saturday was a “full day!”
Spent many hours exploring the neighborhood called Monti (translates to mountains as it is very hilly). It is very near Colosseum.
    - Explored Basilica di San Petro where a very famous sculpture was created by Michaelangelo.
    - then I stumbled upon Museo dei Fori Imperiali which has been excavated and there are many rooms that explain how this Forum was created.
    - Also there is a park (Parco del Colle Opio) at one end of Monti that you can see is right next to the Colosseum
    - finish off this part of the day with lunch at Trattoria da Valentino
    - Andi I had to include this picture of a Vespa w/ a sidecar. Never one of those before! 🤗
    - then last night I join a group called ex pats living in Rome for dinner at ristorante Santa Lucia (just off of Piazza Navona) this where the movie Eat Pray Love was filmed starring Julia Roberts

    Ciao!

BTW had to include this picture of a pay phone….Guess not everyone in Rome has a smart phone.
Had dinner with some old friends from Westport who I haven’t seen in 12+ yrs.
    Long day!
Italian lessons continue to be frustrating.

It is amazing to just look around and see the amazing buildings and architecture in Roma.
These are just a few of those sights.
Also just discovered a library right next to my school to do my homework. Beautiful courtyard with orange trees.
Finished the evening at a new ristorante - Sinfonia del Fusto. The translation of the neon sign is “listen to your taste!”
    Va bene giornata! 😁

  • A Busy Day in Roma!

    May 12, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Lots of things today! Started with a visit to an exhibition about Leonardo di Vinci. Pictures of many of his drawings and models made of many of his designs include machinery, cities even a design for what we would call a helicopter.
Oh and you will a picture of the top of the library where I go before school to finish my homework. And yes I now have a Roma library card!
    Then on to Scuola (school).
My school organized a visit to Domus Aurea right across from the Colosseum. Built around 64 AD for Emperor Nero. It was a palace that consisted of a series of buildings separated by gardens, vineyard. After Nero’s death his successors decided to erase most of what he built. Just a huge place. At the end of the tour there was an area that is setup for different performances over the next couple of months.
A couple of pics included. No such that as a clothes dryer here. Had cleaning woman here today and you will see how we dry the laundry.
I finished off the day with my first real home cooked meal. Fusilli w/ peas, chicken and spinach. Think I’ll sleep well tonight! 🤗🤗

  • Mistake Day!

    May 15, 2023 in Italy

So today I had planned to go a museum but forgot all National Museums are closed on Monday so I had time to kill. I decided to get in line to see the inside of the Pantheon. The line was long but moved pretty good. The inside is quite spectacular! Stopped in a couple of churches. The churches are just incredible. Each one is more ornate than the next!
Was then strolling around and found my way thru Piazza Navona again for some more pictures.
Sure hope the weather gets better! 🤔

  • Visit to Tivoli and Villa D’Este

    May 20, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Today I traveled by train to Tivoli (1 hr.) to see Villa D’Este. Tivoli is 200 yrs older than Rome. Villa D’Este was a palace built for Cardinal Ippolito by a famous architect of the time in 16th century. I had a private guide. Incredible fountains that all work thru gravity. Huge property that has great view of the valley below. So much history and the artwork and the detail when you think about the period of time. Just wow!Read more

    May 21, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Today was a visit to Piazza del Popolo a huge piazza that was the original entrance to Roma. The Egyptian obelisk, Neptune Fountain and Goddess of Rome Fountain and the 2 twin churches. The guy playing the electric piano sang and he was pretty good! Then hiked up to the view of the Piazza and a great view of Roma. Strolled the streets nearby. Unique looking hotel along the way near the Spanish Steps. And of course a stop for a little lunch! The streets are packed with people both tourists and locals and the ristoranti are very busy and there sure are a lot of them!
Got home before the thunderstorms came on!
