Nice walk with mor sunflower fields and a man walking the Camino back towards France with a donkey!
I stayed at an amazing albergue. Only 12 beds, each in it's own alcove. The lower beds had privacy curtains, and the uppers were like tiny rooms accessed by tiny staircases.Leggi altro

Ventosa to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

20+ mile walk through rolling hills and vineyards today brought me to this cute little town of 6500. Lots of restaurants with outdoor seating.
The weather was good for walking. Not too hot with a cool breeze, and fortunately, not too many hills to climb.Leggi altro

It was a hot day - and night in the albergue. Especially since I was on the top (4th) floor, and in the top bunk! Then Julie and I missed the 10:00 curfew by about 15 minutes, so came back from dinner to a locked albergue! Fortunately, there was a buzzer and the somewhat disgruntled manager came and opened the door for us, pointing out the sign with the curfew posted. We hadn't seen the sign when we left for dinner because the door was open and it wasn't very visible. But it was a beautiful old city, with a church in partial ruin.Leggi altro

Since we are walking shorter days we have more time to explore the town.

Although the church here is fairly small, it is very ornate. The oldest part of the church was built in the 12th century.

We are taking it easy for the last few days that Julie is on the Camino because she's having some pain in her achilles tendon. I don't want to send her home to her husband injured!

So today's walk was an easy 8 miles of fairly flat trail through the Spanish countryside. As we approach the Rioja area we are starting to see more vineyards.Leggi altro

Two fountains - one with wine, the other water. I walked by here too early for wine last year. After tasting it this year I found that I hadn't missed much.

Long walk with lots of crazy wind!!

Could barely sleep last night from the sound of a wind storm. The wind continued all day while we walked across the Pyrenees. Naturally, the wind was either blowing us back or sideways. So we had to walk uphill against the wind. 😣

Arrived at Roncesvalles around 2:30, had a brief rest, and continued on to Espinal. About 15 miles altogether.Leggi altro
