Apparently the volcano has been putting on quite a show. I saw pictures of it from yesterday, and there was a lot of fire and smoke. But the clouds are obscuring it today.

Yes! There's a volcano that you can hike up. You have to go with a guide.
Hike between villages

I went on a hike between villages today with a group from the school. We stopped for a while in a park where a lot of people went for a swim. Saw a van with Oregon plates!
Women's Weaving Cooperatives

There are dozens of these shops all around, full of beautiful hand woven scarves, shawls, tablecloths, etc. They are made with cotton dyed with natural dyes from plants.

I helped María make tamales de arroz - tamales made with rice instead of masa. They were delicious.
Atop Indian Nose

Went on a hike today organized by the school to a mountain called Indian's Nose. Fantastic views of the lake from up top.
Sharron MathansI have a catalog from Lindblad/Natl. Geo. expeditions with a trip from Belize to Guatemala City, mentioning another lake in G. where Mayan ruins are found, Yaxha Lake. They describe the marvelous ruins there and at Lake Tikal. I didn't realize Lake Tikal is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest and most impressive archaeological sites and urban centers of the re-Columbian Maya civilizations .
