Place Stanislas is the soul of Nancy, widely regarded as "one of the most elegant public squares in Europe." It is not just a simple plaza, but a complete 18th-century urban masterpiece. It was built between 1752 and 1756 by Stanislas Leszczyński, the former King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine.
In 1983, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (along with the two connecting squares). It has been voted "France's Favorite Monument" (2021), ranked among Lonely Planet's "World's 4th Most Beautiful Squares," and was famously praised by the great writer Victor Hugo as "the most beautiful, most pleasant, and most perfect square" he had ever seen.
