    March 24 in Canada ⋅ 🌬 4 °C

Going to airport now for 7pm flight, just to avoid traffic, but actually I cannot wait to start this trip. It started dropping ice pallets just when we loading luggage to the taxi, then the sun comes out at the airport.

YYZ to RBA via CDG

    March 25 in France ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Onboarding started without delay, that was good. The plane moved out of the bay shortly, taxied to the runway and took off right on time. Touch down at CDG was eventless, we were about 40 min ahead of schedule, that was even better. However, in searching for transfer gate a guy pointed us downstairs and a lady in floor 0 told us go back to floor 2. Back and forth a few rounds finally we found the gate of the next flight to RBA, a good exercise after the 7 hour flight.

Origin of the Rick’s Cafe

    March 26 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We came across this famous cafe where an iconic romantic movie story happened here, however, rumour had it the cafe was totally fictional. But it is right here, in front of my eyes. Let’s find out!

From time to time, lazy people makes smart choices, let’s get it from DeepSeek

The origin of **Rick’s Café** can be traced to both **fictional and real-world inspirations**, each with its own cultural significance:
    ---
    ### 1. **Fictional Origin: *Casablanca* (1942)**
    - **Source**: The iconic **Rick’s Café Américain** was created for the classic Hollywood film *Casablanca*, starring Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine and Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund.
    - **Role in Film**: Set in World War II-era Morocco, the café serves as a neutral meeting place for refugees, spies, and soldiers. It embodies themes of love, sacrifice, and political intrigue. Famous lines like *“Here’s looking at you, kid”* and the song *“As Time Goes By”* are tied to this fictional café.
    - **Legacy**: Though entirely imaginary, the café became a symbol of wartime romance and moral ambiguity. Notably, no real Rick’s Café existed in Casablanca during WWII—it was a Hollywood studio set.
    ---
    ### 2. **Real-World Rick’s Café in Casablanca, Morocco**
    - **Creation**: Inspired by the film, American diplomat **Kathy Kriger** opened a real **Rick’s Café** in 2004 in Casablanca’s historic medina. She aimed to bring the movie’s nostalgic atmosphere to life.
    - **Design**: The café replicates the film’s Art Deco style, complete with a piano bar (where *“As Time Goes By”* is played), arched doorways, and a vintage gambling room. It serves as a tribute to the movie’s enduring appeal.
    - **Cultural Impact**: Though unrelated to the original film’s production, it has become a pilgrimage site for fans and a symbol of how pop culture can shape real-world spaces.

    **Rick’s Café
(Here’s looking at you, kid)和钢琴曲《时光流逝》(*As Time Goes By*)均在此诞生。
Rick’s Café”**

  • Western Loulan Restaurant

    March 27 in Morocco ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We arrived to Marrekesh around noon, need to find a restaurant.
Without being here in Morocco during March, people wouldn’t be able to understand the situation. March is the month of Ramadan, meaning visitors need to plan ahead for a place to eat. Most of the local restaurants were either closed or under renovation which made absolute sense. Fortunately we came across this restaurant serving Chinese northwestern food. When dishes were carried to the table immediately we noticed the generous serving portion. We should have just ordered one for two of us. Food were of good flavour and tasty for sure.
I then observed the owner Mr. Zhang helping the local people without hesitation, left a good memory.

  • El Badi Palace

    March 28 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This morning we started from El Badi Palace.
    (copied from wikipedia)
El Badi Palace or Badi' Palace[1] (Arabic: قصر البديع, lit. 'Palace of Wonder/Brilliance', also frequently translated as the "Incomparable Palace") is a ruined palace located in Marrakesh, Morocco. It was commissioned by the sultan Ahmad al-Mansur of the Saadian dynasty a few months after his accession in 1578, with construction and embellishment continuing throughout most of his reign. The palace, decorated with materials imported from numerous countries ranging from Italy to Mali, was used for receptions and designed to showcase the Sultan's wealth and power. It was one part of a larger Saadian palace complex occupying the Kasbah district of Marrakesh.

    Desert (N29°49’10” W06°41’00”)
Day three started from moving out of the camp site. In doing so, we need to drive the truck climbing uphill over sand dunes, then heading east, driving on a dried up riverbed and later a dried up lake.
During lunch hour we stopped at Titanic Restaurant (GPS 29.9434119, -6.3821075) to enjoy the scenery and to relax. The restaurant stood lonely in the middle of nowhere, providing water and food to the travellers, motorists and expedition teams like us. Why it is named Titanic? I had a bit hard time relate it to the ship, maybe for sitting at the bottom of a lake? The lunch was totally local, tea and coffee were superb. I also had a glass bottle Coca Cola. In the afternoon we saw from a distance Morocco Rally racing cars dashing by, set out burst of dust to the air.
Tonight we camp at the edge of dried up lake bottom, wide open, except on the north side by the plateau hill. Cellular signal strength went down to zero.

    Apr 2–3 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    2025-04-02 Desert to Foum Zguid 55km gravel/sand 4hrs
    Foum Zguid (N30°07’39” W6°52’02”)
In the morning we checked everything inside and outside of the living unit, including water pump shut off, all the drawers and doors are locked, all windows closed and properly locked, stair is rolled up, and finally set the unit to drive mode in the control app (yes, it has a control app). Then we checked tire pressure and inflated the passenger side front tire since its pressure read is a bit low.
This has been the daily routine procedure pressured by the team leader since day one. For obvious reasons the driving condition has been rough and tough, very bumpy, any missing point will for sure cause damage.
When all are ready, we set out driving to Camp Bab Rimal near Foum Zguid. The “road” is still at the bottom of the dried up lake, with all the up and downs, small hills, soft sand and hard rocks. We arrived at the camp quite early, so we have enough time catching up the chores e.g. clean up garbage, wash clothes, fill up fresh water, and dump others.
The site is well equipped with fresh water supply, dumping station, shower and washing, outdoor swimming pool, small shop and restaurant.
