    Tiling.

    September 30, 1997 in Australia ⋅ 12 °C

Because we decided to use three different sizes of floor tiles, it was difficult to know how many of each to order.
I cut out newspaper squares in each tile size so I could 'play' with a layout. The one in the picture is about two square metres and interlocks with itself on each side. This way this layout could be repeated easily and the number needed of each size calculated. The tiles were ordered from South Melbourne and delivered - the laying could begin.
A blue chalk line was used to mark the edge of the tiles. It was a continuation of the western edge of the passageway. This meant that the kitchen / diner, passageway, toilet and laundry would be tiled. The 'living room' would have some type of hard wearing carpet. The bedrooms and study were to have 'good' carpet.
Once the tiles were laid, we liked the look so decided to lay them in the 'living room' as well. This meant breaking up the straight edge to tie in the additional tiles.
