  • R & R on Orpheus Island.

    28. elokuuta 1997, Australia ⋅ 13 °C

Glad products had a promotional competition for distributors of their products. The prize was a weekend for two on Orpheus Island in the Whitsundays. PFD was one of the winners and Janette was chosen to have the trip.
We flew from Melbourne to Brisbane and then from Brisbane to Townsville. From Townsville, it was by seaplane to Orpheus Island with great views of the Whitsundays en route.
In an attempt to keep the resort a little exclusive, no-one under 16 is allowed.
As well as the resort, there is a James Cook University research station on the island. We took a launch and visited the station and were given a tour.

    A nice break from building.

  • Tiling.

    30. syyskuuta 1997, Australia ⋅ 12 °C

Because we decided to use three different sizes of floor tiles, it was difficult to know how many of each to order.
I cut out newspaper squares in each tile size so I could 'play' with a layout. The one in the picture is about two square metres and interlocks with itself on each side. This way this layout could be repeated easily and the number needed of each size calculated. The tiles were ordered from South Melbourne and delivered - the laying could begin.
A blue chalk line was used to mark the edge of the tiles. It was a continuation of the western edge of the passageway. This meant that the kitchen / diner, passageway, toilet and laundry would be tiled. The 'living room' would have some type of hard wearing carpet. The bedrooms and study were to have 'good' carpet.
Once the tiles were laid, we liked the look so decided to lay them in the 'living room' as well. This meant breaking up the straight edge to tie in the additional tiles.

  • Kitchen bench.

    16. tammikuuta 1999, Australia

Abikhair's Emporium, Albury, closed in 1997. Albury City took much of the contents for a museum exhibit.
The building was sold and the remaining contents of the Emporium were auctioned.
January 16th 1999, Janette's birthday, we went to the auction.
We had not been able to decide on a kitchen bench. There were several shop counters to be auctioned and we decided that one of these would make a suitable bench. There were two really good, heavy, solid ones and a less solid one. We worked out what we were prepared to bid to and waited for them to come up for sale.
Bidding started higher than our upper limit on both the better ones. That left one. I resolved to get it. As they say - the rest is history.
It wasn't as heavy and strong as the others but it was much longer.
On the way home, we arranged for Canny Transport to pick it up and deliver it.
    Happy Birthday Janette.
