    Amsterdam Arrival

    Goedemorgen amsterdam! We have arrived in the city of canals. We were here 5 years ago and in many ways it seems like nothing has changed. It’s hard not to fall in love with the scenery and architecture of the city. It’s even harder to resist the chips and mayonnaise. First stop was Vlaams Friteshuis.

    But to work off the belly full of chips and mayonnaise, we spent the day wandering the streets of Amsterdam. And in true Jason and Ricky fashion, we got lost several times throughout the day. Bloody Google maps! But hey that’s the charm of Amsterdam. No matter where you are in the city, there’s always something of interest.

    Amsterdam, and the Netherlands in general, is so accepting of diversity. For pride week, the LGBTIQ+ flag adorns many establishments. Even some of the trams are painted rainbow colours.

    We are staying in the heart of the red light district, in the centre of the city. Everything is within walking distance. And while we are in the centre of the hustle and bustle, our accommodation is like an oasis away from the hectic streets, except for the chiming church bells.

    Frankfurt Layover

    We arrived at 6 am local time, after a flight with screaming children. Needless to say, Jason wasn’t impressed. Then the security check saga began. Although only in transit, we needed to go through a security check, including a full body scan and a physical body search and then through customs, who grilled us on every detail of our trip.

    Finally on board, we were mistaken for Germans by the German hostess. The mistake was probably ordering our drinks in German. Ricky: “Wasser, bitte”. Hostess replied with a whole lot of German and Ricky had to admit that his German was limited to Grade 8 German. Hostess: ”But there wasn’t an accent so I thought you were German. And you look German.” Grade 8 German obviously paid off.

    Every holiday, people seem to think we are German. Last year, it was a Kyrgyz soccer player at Bangkok airport.At least, we weren’t mistaken for twins, which we got everywhere in India.

    Now to complete the final leg to Europe.

    Singapore Layover

    After almost 8 hours of travel, we landed in Singapore for a 5 hour layover. There’s only so much walking and so many foot massages that you can get before it gets tiresome. Ricky couldn’t handle the foot massage, having flashbacks to Vietnam and Thailand where they brought out a wooden stick and started digging it in the bottom of the foot. No stick for Ricky. The memory will forever be there and the scars may never heal.

    We did ponder how long you could live in Singapore airport, with the entertainment deck, movie theatre and bars. But after 5 hours of walking aimlessly, we were ready for our almost 13 hour flight to Frankfurt. Well, as ready as we could be.

    Day 1: Let the adventure begin!

    The countdown to our departure has finally arrived. We are no longer counting in days, but now hours/minutes. Thanks to everyone who came along to farewell us last night. Let the adventure begin!
