Trieste, Italy

We took a train to Trieste, Italy. Trieste is a city on the Adriatic coast that has been a traders port for hundreds of years. As a result it has been a part of various kingdoms and countries and only permanently becoming a part of Italy in 1958. As a result of it's history, it is an amalgamation of architecture, food and culture.

There were two things that did stand out immediately. The first was the noise. Coming from Venice where there were no cars, so the vehicular nose was noticable, and we had to be careful crossing streets. The second was how clean and will taken care of the city was. It is one of the richest cities in Italy and it shows.

We did a walking tour using gps my city which took us to various very ornate churches and piazzas. Along the way we found several excavated areas from the Roman era including a theater and an archway. In the late afternoon we hiked up the hill to the castle which was really only used as a fort. We did a quick tour of the museum and did some time exploring the ground which have great views of the whole city. This city is very compact so one could view the entire area from the hill.

One of our stops was Caffe San Marco, a cafe with a rich history of writers and philosophers. It now also contains a book store. We went to the bar and Jeff ordered two iced lattes. We were presented with cold foamed milk. Our follow up order was espresso to add to the milk. We forgot to say cafe latte. Though the milk by itself was good.

We spent the early evening on the deck of the castle enjoying a drink and snacks while watching the sunset. It was nice to not have to rush to the next touristy thing. We enjoyed gelato on our way back to the room.Read more
