    Hello Antarctica!

    12 февраля 2025 г., South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 30 °F

Sailing through the English Channel. We get a landing today! Woot!

Recorded a bunch of Chinstraps, a few Gentoos, lots of Antarctica Shags, 2 Wilson Storm Petrels, and a couple Antarctic Turns. Not bad so far!
Oh ya, 3 whale sightings. But just the top fins.

    Special Operations Boat

    12 февраля 2025 г., Антарктида ⋅ ⛅ 30 °F

The Special Operations Boat (SOB) is a very cool toy.
Each ship has 2 boats. Based on a a boat originally designed for the military, Viking customized the design by extending the length to accommodate 12 guests + Driver + Guide.
They can reach 40 knots and are designed to be dropped, fully loaded, from 30 ft without damage.
Passengers sit on air-cushioned seats that are super comfy in rough seas.

Wish they would let me drive it, but only the bridge crew have the correct licenses to drive one. :-/

    Fort Point, Antarctica

    12 февраля 2025 г., Антарктида ⋅ ⛅ 32 °F

Chinstraps, Gentoos, Fur Seals, a couple Elephant Seals, Humpbacks, Lots of flying birds.

The plan was for a landing, but due to the large number of Fur and Elephant Seals, which aren’t good sharing space, even with Penguins, turned into a Zodiac cruise.

We also went on our 1st Special Operations Boat (SOB) ride. (Love those boats, wish I could drive one.)

NAMING: The feature's name is descriptive, replacing the earlier version 'Castle Rock'.

LOCATION: a conspicuous rocky point rising to 85 m and linked by a low 700 m isthmus to the southeast coast of Greenwich Island.

    Kayaking at Portal Point

    13 февраля 2025 г., Антарктида ⋅ ⛅ 28 °F

Lots of little bergies. Steered clear of a napping Leopard Seal.
There was a Leopard Seal last time I kayaked too. Must be a thing for me… lol
Expedition Team said that was the first one they had seen in months. Kind of weird considering they should be pretty common…

    Lemarie Channel

    14 февраля 2025 г., Антарктида ⋅ ☁️ 30 °F

Plan was to pass through the Lemarie Channel to Port Charcot. Unfortunately there was a massive ice berg blocking the exit. Octantis made an amazing u-turn in a very narrow channel.

    Arnoux’s beaked whale sighting

    14 февраля 2025 г., Антарктида ⋅ ☁️ 30 °F

Saw these in the Lemarie Channel, next to the massive ice berg blocking our passage.
Chris, the marine mammal specialist was super excited about the observation. Thought it was a Minke whale at first, but turns out to be a really special sighting.
Looking up info about the whale, the first sentence in the description of this whale is “The chances of seeing this whale are not great.” lol

    Hidden Bay

    14 февраля 2025 г., Антарктида ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

The original explorers approach from the North and a string of islands create a screen hiding the bay, hence the name “Hidden Bay”. (Thank you Tato for the info)

    Weather Balloon launch

    15 февраля 2025 г., South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 28 °F

Due to helium needed to launch the balloon, Octantis can only do 1 weather balloon launch a week. Pretty neat to watch science in action.

Site to track daily global weather balloon launches in real-time: https://sondehub.org

Weather ballon needs to connect to a land based active antenna to appear. Unfortunately the 2 in Antarctica were off at the time, but the team is still able to share the data with NOAA.

    Data collected:
    Temperature (F)
    Humidity (%)
    Pressure (hPa)
    Wind Speed (meters per sec)
    Wind Direction (degree)
