  • Hiroshima Toshogu Shrine

    18 Januari 2020, Jepun ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

The weather is a lovely 15* today (compared to the lows of 6 the previous few days), so I’ve decided to take this afternoon to complete the shrine hike up the mountain behind the Hiroshima Toshogu Shrine. This 4KM hike snakes up the mountain and ends at the peace pagoda.

On the walk back down I met 4 English speaking tour guides who were plotting a new tour up the mountain hike. They invited me to a Japanese tea ceremony on the side of the mountain and even taught me calligraphy with proper ink and brush- was a fantastic experience!

  • Miyajima Island

    19 Januari 2020, Jepun ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Visiting the small island of Miyajima this morning, this is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Japan’s most visited tourist spots. The most important attraction on the island is Itsukushima-jinja, which has this element of looking like its floating on the waves when the tide came in later in the day. The temple is also home to vermilion torri (shrine gate) (sadly undergoing restoration for the next 4 years so not visible).Baca lagi

  • Dejima

    20 Januari 2020, Jepun ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

First stop Dejima, this was a Dutch artificial island constructed by the Japanese in order to segregate foreigners from the mainland. The Dutch were restricted to Dejima during Japan's two centuries of isolation as the only remaining Westerners allowed in the country. The island tells the story of our the Dutch East India Trading Company (VoC) both in terms of trade and culture.Baca lagi

After the atomic bomb a large majority of the city was destroyed, in the clover garden area a large majority of Meji-period European houses, at the the top of the hill there was beautiful views of Nagasaki harbour.

Half way down there is Ōura Cathedral, this hilltop church is Japan’s oldest (1864). The church is dedicated to the 26 Christians who were crucified in Nagasaki in 1597, because of they were practicing Christianity in Japan. The church is now dedicated for all those Christians who practiced in secret during the shogunal rule.

  • Suwa-jinja

    21 Januari 2020, Jepun ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Reached by climbing 200 steps this was a beautiful way to end my time in Nagasaki. The grounds are protected by komainu (protective dogs), the dogs were often called upon by prostitues, who prayed to them that storms would arrive, forcing sailors to stay in port another day.Baca lagi

  • Night train Nagasaki —> Tokyo

    21 Januari 2020, Jepun ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Long night tonight, travelling from Nagasaki all the way to Tokyo some 1,250KM and should take 12 hours.

    Nagasaki —> Hakata
    Hakata —> Himeji
    Himeji —> Tokyo

Part of the trip involves an overnight train from Himeji to Tokyo. I must admit this was much nicer than I thought, and with only 5 people in the carriage it was like having the place to myself! I must admit I slept on and off, but after a strong coffee after arriving in Tokyo I felt much more refreshed. Now im back to where I started 11 days ago, the bustling city of Tokyo.Baca lagi

  • Meiji-jingū

    22 Januari 2020, Jepun ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

First stop is Tokyo’s grandest shintō Shrine dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken (1868-1912)- their rule is one that moved Japan from an isolated feudal nation to a modern nation state. It is for that reason that many in Japan therefore see the pair as the mother and father of modern Japan. The gardens around the shrine have some 120,000 trees from all over Japan.Baca lagi
