  • Flight to San Fran

    25 januari 2020, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We thought we wanted to keep Florence awake for this 5 hour flight but we had no idea how exhausting that would be. Our flight was nearly empty so we spent ages walking around the plane while she did up all the empty seats seatbelts and then undid them. She watched Frozen for the last bit of the flight and ate lots of snacks. Anytime Jason asked to hold her or sit with her she screamed "OWWWWWWW DAD NOOOO DAD". Pretty much as soon as the wheels touched down on landing she fell asleep.Meer informatie

  • San Fran to Auckland

    26 januari 2020, North Pacific Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

12 hour flight, and not a single open seat on the plane. Our sweet Florence girl charmed the people working at the boarding desk and had us upgraded to Economy Plus so at least Jason could sit without being completely scrunched up. Florence slept for about 4 hours (broken up into 3 naps) during this flight. She watched Finding Nemo multiple times and discovered a love for Paw Patrol. She shared her time on our laps and really did very well despite the small amount of sleep. I, on the other hand, had an anxiety attack at hour 2 of this flight and Jason worked hard to take care of Florence and I. Turns out on long flights with a baby love lopoks like ordering more water for your spouse, fast forwarding dumb airplane tv ads when their hands are full of toddler and replugging the headphones 800 times due to toddler wiggling. When we landed and were allowed to stand up Florence stood up and cheered, which made people around us laugh. She was so pumped she tried to give everyone high fives and fist bumps as they left the plane. And then we had to wait for our bags and that was too much for her little toddler heart to handle. She did a great job and was just too tired for waiting. Within seconds of getting into the rental car she was snoring.Meer informatie

  • Pukaranga

    27 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We are settled in our Airbnb with a lovely family hosting us. Florence has already been invited to swim with them and to join them for a bbq 😂. We spent the afternoon getting oriented, showering off plane germs and wandering the nearby shops and malls. Our hosts tell us the NZ sun is brutal between 10am-5pm and they try to avoid having their little one out too much during those times. We will have lots of days where that will be hard to manage, but for today it seemed worthwhile.Meer informatie

  • Auckland Domain

    27 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

In order to run our sillies out we visited the Auckland Domain - the oldest park in NZ (Auckland? Not sure). It was beautiful, 25C, sunny, light refreshing breeze. It is a 200 acre park but we stuck close to the duck pond much to Florence's delight. She got to see fish and birds. She likes "smelling" flowers and declaring that they all smell yucky.Meer informatie

  • Free Walking Tour

    28 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We woke up feeling much more likely to survive after 12 hours of sleep to a sunny and warm Tuesday morning. We drove into Auckland proper and met up with Brad and Pam for a free walking tour. This tour was fantastic, we had the opportunity to learn a bit about Maori culture, the rejuvenation of the city for America's cup, artwork in the city and Auckland University. Jason carried Florence in the backpack carrier and she was so tired she even fell asleep without Floyd. The volcano looking statues that Jason and Florence are looking at look down to the subway. Auckland is apparently 48% individuals that did not grow up in NZ and so it has a ton of amazing restaurants and cultural blends.Meer informatie

  • Auckland University - free walking tour

    28 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The second part of our free walking tour. We saw Prince Andrew Park which has plants donated by other countries - amazing mix of plants and trees to create a stunning area. The plaque below was made to commemorate the first church that was built - but has a typo and still exists! Our tour guide told us it is a reminder of the NZ mindset - mistakes are fine, not worth stressing about.Meer informatie

  • Lunch in Auckland Cargo Coffee

    28 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We grabbed some amazing food at a little stall in downtown Auckland and sat outside to eat. I had the seafood platter which was amazing, I even ate the fish because it was cooked so well. Jason had a giant burger with an egg on it and Florence had fries. Florence was delighted to see birds. She also discovered the joy of randomly lifting her legs up so that anyone holding her legs has to carry her.Meer informatie

  • Dr. Rudi's

    28 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Date night! After our hike we sent Florence back to the Airbnb with Brad and Pam and we went back into downtown Auckland to explore. We started off at Dr. Rudi's rooftop bar. Dr. Rudi is a variety of hop grown in NZ. The bar definitely attracts the after work city crowd but we managed to get a seat looking out at the water to relax and plan our evening.Meer informatie

  • Mentatz date night

    28 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We went to Mentatz, a Japanese restaurant on Lorne St - famous for all the different asian restaurants and quality food. We ordered a variety of small dishes - spicy bamboo shoots (VERY SPICY), fried dumplings, grilled dumplings, and tempura shrimp. Everything was delicious and it was very lovely to be able to sit and slowly eat and try new foods without chasing a toddler!Meer informatie

  • My bar

    28 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

When we left the restaurant we set out in search of gelato - but it started raining. To escape the worst of the rain we jumped into the first bar we found - My Bar. We shared a sample paddle with 3 really great NZ beers. Helertau, Behemoth and Deep Creek. This bartender was extraordinary, he had his regulars at the bar and was debating physics and chemistry with them, did a great job at making sure we felt welcome and sharing info on the various breweries and brewmasters around and the general brewing scene in NZ.Meer informatie

  • Vulture lane

    28 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

More rain meant another bar stop. Apparently Vulture lane is the nickname for the street this bar is on - Vulcan Lane. The first restaurant/bar of Auckland was on this street and it used to attract journalists looking for stories, which then attracted lawyers to pursue various stories - thus called Vultures Lane. To this day there are 2 law firms on the street, and the hotel and restaurant that started it all. The hotel has cages in the basement for when sailors were too drunk to walk back to their ship but too poor for a hotel room. We had a flight of beers and they were all very...unique. Vulture Lane seemed like a dive bar but definitely had the best fries and garlic aoili I have ever tried and was full of happy customers.Meer informatie

  • Island Gelato Company

    28 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Finally! Gelato! We actually started the day at this place too to get flat white coffees (latte with no foam basically). Apparently NZ is the country that consumes the most ice cream per capita.

  • Browns Bay

    29 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Our mission for today is to get as far north as we can, while seeing as much of the coast as possible (no highway drives for us!). Our first little trek through Auckland rush hour.got us to Browns Bay, a beautiful beach town. We sat at a restaurant called Beach Bistro and had amazing eggs benedict and waffles. There was a great beach and playground right in front of us but Florence was way too tired to explore.Meer informatie

  • Mcleod's pizza barn and brewery

    29 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

This was a tough lunch that turned amazing. Florence fell asleep just as we arrived, so we were going to do take out but were both over hungry and snappy. She woke up just as we started eating and desperately wanted to be outside. Lucky for us a table in their yard opened up and we had the chance to sit there and eat together. I had a fantastic pizza with shrimp and garlic aioli, Jason had a great pizza and had to share with Florence. The pizzas were very small, maybe 8" diameter, but piled 3 inches high with toppings.Meer informatie

  • Kerikeri

    29 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Night 3 was spent with friends of Sam, Donna and Kane. They just moved into the house on the 27th and don't even have water yet but they welcomed us and fed us and watched Florence while we got ourselves organized in the campervan. They had a tiny dog and 2 cats and a bird so Florence was in love and a delight all evening. We ate cold chicken and salads outside and enjoyed looking at the stars - Donna pointed Venus out to us.

Our first night in the van went great. Florence has a bed in the kitchen and we sleep on the pullout. There were a lot of bugs when we went to bed but none of them bit us. We all slept really well and right until 9a.m.

Also Florence is getting her 2 year molars - we can see them pushing up against the skin of her gums. So that's cool.

  • Fruit stand

    30 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Fruit stands are everywhere and Miss Florence hasn't been eating well so we decided we would stop and let her pick up fruit. She was delighted and chose plums and peaches and devoured 4 plums (pitts and all😬) within a 10 minute drive to our next stop.Meer informatie

  • Parrot Place

    30 januari 2020, Nieuw-Zeeland ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

At the recommendation of Savannah, Donna's daughter we went to Parrot Place in Kerikeri. Florence was in heaven. We got to see all sorts of birds and feed them. The only bit Florence was unimpressed with was the turtles (because they weren't birds).Meer informatie
