    A major highlight of the Orkney Islands was the Ring of Brodgar, a 104-meter (341-foot) diameter ring of ancient stones originally thought to feature up to 60 stones, of which 27 are still standing.

    The researchers have now managed to figure out that Orkney was probably first colonised in 3600 BC, with settlement peaking around 3100-2900 BC.

    Prior to visiting the Ring we made a short walk to the little town of Kirkland where we entered the beautiful St Magnus Cathedral known as the ‘Light in the North’, founded in 1137 by the Viking, Earl Rognvald, in honour of his martyred uncle.
