    Greenwich (London), England

    9. maj 2024, England ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Today is the final day of our glorious world cruise... and embarkation day for our follow-on cruise to the British Isles (England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland) and Norway!

We took a sunny day's walk over to the National Maritime Museum, which consists of three connected museums: the Maritime Museum, (the largest in the world), the Royal Observatory, and the Queen's House (an art gallery of some 450 works).

Completed in the 1630s, the Queen's House, a bright white villa, was at the cutting edge of architecture and design. It lies just adjacent to the Royal Observatory, home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), where East meets West!

During the 17th century the Queen's House was a royal 'House of Delights': a luxurious retreat for Kings and Queens, a place of pleasure for court favourites, and a thriving studio for artists and craftsmen.

Some of the art includes portraits of King Henry VIII, Sir Francis Drake, Napoleon. Admiral Nelson and many, many more.

  • London, Globe Theatre

    10. maj 2024, England ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Our second day of this segment is all about Shakespeare!

Our morning excursion took us to the Globe Theatre, where we looked inside of the new Globe. We learned about the days of yore when the 'guests' were sorted by their penny payment. The cheap seats meant that you were to stand for the performance, all the while you were jostled by petty criminals... and you had no bathrooms!Læs mere

  • London, Leeds Castle, England

    11. maj 2024, England ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

We returned to the beautiful town of Dover in Kent, England where we had booked an excursion to Leed's Castle.

A castle has existed on the site since 857. In the 13th century, it came into the hands of King Edward I for whom it became a favorite residence. In the 16th century, Henry VIII used it as a dwelling for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon,

The present castle dates mostly from the early 19th century. Its last private owner was Olive Lady Baillie, who left the castle in trust to open it to the public. It has been open since 1976.

  • Dublin (Dun Laoghaire), Ireland

    13. maj 2024, Irland ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

We dropped anchor off of Dun Laoghaire, a suburb of Dublin, known as the UNESCO City of Literature, birthplace to James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, and Samuel Beckett.

We took an early tender in, climbed into the Viking shuttle and wig-wagged our way to the drop off/pick up spot in the heart of Dublin. We then hopped on the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus for a one and a half hour city tour.

We saw St. Patrick's Cathederal and the huge Guiness Beer plant. We had lunch at the quintessential Irish pub, Murray's, where i had my first Guinness Stout - delicious! We intended to do actual tours in each, but we were called back to the ship because the weather and sea had made the tendering too dangerous. So, together with about 230 other cruisers that had made it into Dublin, we met together at the port terminal. Then, we were ushered to the nearby Royal Marine Hotel, where we were suitably taken care of for about four hours.

We did manage to tender back to the Neptune at about 6:30pm. It was a bouncy 25-minute ride back, but we all survived!

  • Holyhead, Gwydir Castle, Wales

    14. maj 2024, Wales

    Wales is so beautiful!

Today, we took an excursion to Gwydir Castle. Gwydir Castle is an ancient Welsh house that was formerly the ancestral home of the Wynn family, descendents of the Kings of Gwynedd. The house and garden have been under restoration for more than 20 years. The surviving buildings date from around 1500.

Most recently. King George V and Queen Mary stayed here as the Duke and Duchess of York.

There were at least 8-10 friendly 'guardian' peacocks strutting about the property in their regal splendor. These beautiful beasts have been tending the property since 1828.

The gardens were magnificent with 14 pre-1700 yews and three surviving Cedars of Lebanon from 12 planted to commemorate the wedding if Charles 1st and Henrietta Maria in 1625.

  • Liverpool, England

    15. maj 2024, England ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Let's face it... we are in the home of the Beatles!

This day was filled with visits to two magnificent cathedrals: Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and the
Metropolitan (Catholic) Cathedral of Christ the King; then the Beatle Museum. Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane (near the homes of John, Paul, and Ringo (George lived a little further away)).Læs mere

  • Belfast, Northern Ireland

    16. maj 2024, Nordirland ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

After arriving at the Belfast Terminal, we took an adventure *away* from cities, cars, museums, and galleries (the usual fuss!), and took the excursion to the World Heritage Site, Giant's Causeway.

Amazing! The most unique feature of this beautiful site is the exposure of some 40,000 large, regularly shaped polygon columns of basalt in perfect horizontal sections, forming a pavement.

This dramatic sight has inspired legends of giants striding over the sea to Scotland. (Of course!)

  • The Highlands (Ullapool), Scotland

    17. maj 2024, Skotland ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Ullapool, located in Loch Broom, is a fishing village of some 1,500 residents located in Northern Scotland. We anchored offshore, taking the tender to the little village.

This tiny, tranquil town is the largest community for miles. We strolled along its quiet little streets with Maryann and Paul.

Cathy and I also enjoyed delicious coffees in the Caledonia Hotel while waiting for little shops to open.

  • Orkney Islands (Kirkland), Scotland

    18. maj 2024, Skotland ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

A major highlight of the Orkney Islands was the Ring of Brodgar, a 104-meter (341-foot) diameter ring of ancient stones originally thought to feature up to 60 stones, of which 27 are still standing.

The researchers have now managed to figure out that Orkney was probably first colonised in 3600 BC, with settlement peaking around 3100-2900 BC.

Prior to visiting the Ring we made a short walk to the little town of Kirkland where we entered the beautiful St Magnus Cathedral known as the ‘Light in the North’, founded in 1137 by the Viking, Earl Rognvald, in honour of his martyred uncle.

  • The Highlands (Invergordon), Scotland

    20. maj 2024, Skotland ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Scotland is beautiful! We took a four-hour coach excursion to see this green luscious place.

Our morning began with a drive to the little town of Inverness. We walked the little town, finally ending up getting sandwiches and "skinny latte" for Cathy and capaccino for me in a little attached to the local church, just a hop-step-and-a-jump from our bus cafe.Læs mere

  • Shetland Islands (Lerwick), Scotland

    21. maj 2024, Skotland ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

We arrived in another spectacularly beautiful town this morning.

Because we had a late excursion time, we enjoyed the fitness room, put in a little more packing time, and took the 12-minute shuttle ride into Kerwick.

We seem a little shopped out at this point, so we visited a few shops and just enjoyed a walk in the cool portside town.

In the afternoon, we took a 2-hour excursion to see the countryside. A super-bonus was to see and touch the beautiful and hardy Shetland ponies!

  • Bergen, Disembarkation Day

    23. maj 2024, Norge ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

This morning, we disembarked the Neptune, marking the end to the British to Norway cruise. The Neptune has been our home away from home over the previous four months. (We loved it!)

Most of our luggage was already loaded on our bus, which would eventually take us to our hotel in Bergen but not till after we visited two museums: the old and new Bergen museums.

The first, modern museum depicted the old Bergen, beset by devastating fires over the last 1000 years, The second museum depicted a typical town street with homes and businesses from yesteryear that we actually entered, enabling us to imagine what it was like to live in Norway hundreds of years ago. We stayed for a little play put on for us visitors in the courtyard of the Gamle Bergen Museum. showing the interplay between the inhabitants old Norway.

One snafu: Cathy and I got so engrossed in the "dentistry" inflicted on the town dwellers that we missed the bus back to the hotel! We caught a cab to our Hotel Norge (centrally located in Bergen), so little came of it other than a reminder about watching the time!

  • Bergen Extension, Full Day

    24. maj 2024, Norge ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Today's weather has taken a turn to the wet and rainy. Undaunted, we took a hop-on-hop-off bus to explore Bergen which was founded in 1070 on what was a Viking settlement. It became a commercial powerhouse and was the nations' capital. Finishing the city tour, we ate lunch at the world famous Fisherman's Market. It was tasty but very expensive. (Norway seems to be the most expensive country we have visited)

Then we embarked on an fjord adventure, taking a 3-hour cruise up and down the Mostraumen and Osterfjord fjord. By the way, a fjord is a long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs, typically shaped by glaciers.

I feel like we are squeezing every bit of nectar out of this cruise!

  • Bergen to Oslo Train

    25. maj 2024, Norge ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Up early this morning for the train to Oslo.

Leaving Bergen at 8:15 a.m, we shared the fast train with about 120 fellow cruisers plus the usual commuters and travelers.

Our six-hour smooth ride carried us through many tunnels, including one six mile tube... as well as presented majestic vistas - mountains, lakes, fjords, icy fields, forests, and more-than-memorable water fantasies around every turn and tunnel egress.

We saw picture-perfect fjords sided by majestic cliffs kissing the frigid water, turbulent river rapids, vast fields of frozen water amid snow filled fields, a 50-mile long lake and solitary, small, wooden domiciles dotting the sparse landscape.

Then, at precisely 3:05 p.m., as promised, we pulled into Oslo. We gathered our 120-strong cruisers and descended on the Clarion The Hub Hotel, a mere 10-minute walk from our train disembarkation point.

Now, one full day left and counting the minutes down to our flight from Oslo to Copenhagen and to LAX.

  • Oslo, Norway, Final Day (Part 1)

    26. maj 2024, Norge ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Today, Viking provided us a city viewing bus excursion stopping at the Norsk Maritime Museum to explore Viking history; at the same location, we visited the Kontiki Museum.

The second part of the excursion took us to the incredible Frogerparken, where we walked the grounds that were filled with 200 remarkable sculptures. The sculpture installation is the world's largest sculpture park made by a single artist, Gustav Vigeland.

For the rest of the day, we strolled around our hotel and busy heart-of-the-city. By mid afternoon, we ended up walking over to the Munch Museum, where we spent about two hours marveling at his works, which reflected his mystic, investigative-come psychological and scientific mind!
