  • Hamburg, Day Two, Bergen-Belsen Memorial

    April 21, 2025 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

Today, we are off on a pilgrimage to Bergen-Belsen Memorial Nazi concentration camp where some 70,000 prisoners lost their lives, including Anne Frank. The grim toll included 30,000 Jews, 20,000 Russians. 15,000 Polish men and women...

"Extermination by Labor". Several large mass graves on site (mounds).

The Nazis instituted camp 'identity politics' meant to divide populations...using
triangle Badges depicting nationalities, lifestyle, religion, region, who arrested by, etc.

When the Brits liberated the camp in April of 1945. some 10,000 bodies littered the grounds, and over 15,000 died within two weeks of the rescue from typhoid, starvation, tuberculosis, etc.

  • Copenhaven, Day One, Part 2

    April 23, 2025 in Denmark ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Today we took an excursion to the Rosenborg Castle.

This Renaissance castle was built by King Christian IV in the early 17th century and served as a royal residence until around 1710.

The castle functions as a museum, showcasing the Royal Collections, including artifacts from Danish royal history, from the late 16th to the 19th century.

We had the opportunity to see the Crown Jewels. The Castle is famously home to the Danish Crown Jewels and royal regalia, which are kept in special vaults within the castle and are worn by the reigning monarch on special occasions.

Our excursion today was "Wonderful Copenhagen & Tivoli."

We started the tour by visiting St Alban's, the "only Anglican church" in Denmark. We looked about the church grounds for 30 minutes and then headed to Tivoli Gardens, located in the heart of Copenhagen. Tivoli is the second-oldest amusement park in the world.

Tivoli was filled with children...lots of happiness! The beautiful gardens, gorgeous of greenest grass and vibrant flowers mixed throughout the fun-filled amusement park.

Instead of taking the coach back, we walked back to the shuttle pick-up. A wonderful city!

  • Helsinki, Finland

    April 26, 2025 in Finland ⋅ ⛅ 36 °F

Today, our 9:30am Helsinki/Porvoo excursion was a little on the cold side...32 degrees, so we bundled up in our puffers, and upon arriving in Porvoo we walked a few streets. We saw the oldest "cathedral" in Finland (Porvoo Cathedral - only from the outside because of a confirmation ceremony) and ended up in a quaint coffee shop from which we returned to the coach and ship.

In the afternoon, we walked into downtown Helsinki itself and we were very impressed by the shops, department stores, and vast number of restaurants and coffee shops.

Yes! Another special event - A Night With ABBA - for world cruise travelers! Silversea provided a beautiful dinner and entertainment event which featured ABBA entertainers flown in from Oslo.

About 170 of us were hosted in a huge countryside (former) factory/warehouse that formerly manufactured dynamite.

Backstory: Alfred Nobel (of Nobel Prizes's fame) previously owned the dynamite manufacturer building.

    Awesome experience!
