We got in last night. Slept well. This morning, Glenn and I walked the neighborhood. 45 min.

Oscar and Cathy joined us all for lunch. Their daughter is a missionary in Guatemala.

As we ate lunch, we had lots of laughs and encouragement.

  • Aunt Hattie

    November 8, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

We made a quick stop to see Aunt Hattie. She recognized us immediately.

We called dad on FaceTime so aunt Hattie could see and talk to mom.

Aunt Hattie was confused but was pleasant.

  • Drive down to McAllen

    November 9, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

We started the morning off by our monthly co-hort “aging parents”. We showed up 10 min late as I overslept.

We left San Antonio around 10:30 in the morning heading south.

Around 12:30 we stopped in Alice, Texas at the wal-mart store and then found a local park for our picnic lunch.

With another stop at Flying J, we pulled into Kasper’s place just around 4pm.

We visited a while before supper.

I talked Shirley into playing the game Chronology. Fun. I forgot to take a picture.

  • Meet the Kasper

    November 10, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 63 °F

Friday was a full day. It started off with my weekly zoom call to my Bolivian ladies. We all served together back in the 80’s and 90’s.

Then our monthly Member Care call with our other Avant member care providers.

We had lunch with Bob and Shirley. True veteran missionaries. They served for years with GMU in Argentina and then Bolivia. I mean they were at the tip of South America in Usuiah, Argentina. They then worked many years as an instructor at Rio Grande Bible Institute as a language teacher. And then many years as a prof at the historical seminary of SETECA in Guatemala City.

We were quite sad when they moved back to the states as Glenn and I just moved down to Guatemala in 2006. But they have not stopped serving and working. Bob and Shirley continue to serve and instruct with on line classes.

They serve in their local church here in the valley. And we try to meet up frequently. While we were living in Guatemala, the Kasper’s made frequent work trips and we would often take them to lake Atitlan for an extended weekend of shopping and relaxing. Fun.

The evening was filled with a large gathering of those Avant folks that live and serve here on campus at Rio Grande Bible College. Roger shared and then the ladies gathered for a sweet time of fellowship.

  • 3 Amigas (Arlene, Beverly and Marita)

    November 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

We had breakfast with Arlene, Beverly and Gretchen (who sat in for Marita) at some Mexican restaurant down the street from Rio Grande Bible Institute in McAllen, Tx.

Arlene and Beverly are both widowed. Both lived and served in Guatemala and then in Mexico. What a rich history of faithfulness to the Lord for his mercy’s are New every morning.

We were making “connections right and left”. Do you know so-in-so? Who else went to language school with you? What was it like living in Guatemala those years (60’s and 70’s)? How has it been and what has been the difficulties since your husband died?

My heart was blessed and encouraged. Gretchen joined since she lives in the area. She was also Karen’s 2nd grade teacher back in the early 90’s when we as a family lived and served in Bolivia.

I gave the ladies gift bags of encouragement that included blank cards, candles, lotion and gift card to Sonic and Olive Garden. We hope they are encouraged as much as they were a blessing to us. They shared their lives with so many people through the years. Thank you. Thank you

  • Lunch with the Browns

    November 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

We had lunch with the Browns. We had a very interesting and rewarding lunch with Alan and Phyllis. We learned that Alan was part of the singles group at Northwest back in the late 70’s and 80’s. They met and married later in life. (Nearly 40 years of age). Then they adopted 6 siblings from Mexico. Yes, that’s what I said - 6. And that had its challenges to say the least.

Now the Browns are empty nesters, grandparents and teaching in the college.

What a story. A story of God’s graciousness and His faithfulness.

We really enjoyed being with them and hearing their story.

  • Visiting Karen & Thomas

    November 13, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

We’ve been having a relaxing and fun time with Thomas and Karen.

Although it’s been raining and cold all weekend, we’ve made the best of it.

We worked a puzzle, played Chronology, went shopping and enjoyed lots of laughs.

We also went to two different steak houses restaurants where the Greek family from their church owns it. The food was very delicious. We had quail, salmon, steak, chicken. Delicious.
