Teacher Eliot Wigginton and his high school students started interviewing local elders to document fast-disappearing Southern Appalachian skills, oral histories, and folklore. The students initially published these transcripts in a quarterly magazine named after the bioluminescent fungus native to the local mountains. In 1972, Doubleday compiled the magazine material into The Foxfire Book, which unexpectedly became a massive national bestseller.
