Day at the park

Our last day in Zagreb. Our train goes at 16:38 to Budapest. We’ve come to Maksimir Park which has a huge oak forest and tons of lovely shade.

We thought that there was a picnic event on, but apparently it stopped last year so we needed to find somewhere else to eat lunch before returning to the station.

We found a lovely, cheap restaurant on the outskirts of the park.

On the way back into town we got a photo outside the Dinamo Zagreb stadium for my football diaries!もっと詳しく

Arrived in Budapest

Budapest - Day 1

We visited St Stephens’ Basilica first, which was spectacular. After that, we hopped on a bus over to the Buda side of the river and made our way up to the castle where there was a folk festival. We got some Lángos. Alex has a photo of them! They are like big flat churros with stuff on top... of your choice. Alex had the veggie option, Elena and I had meat 🥩

Next we went to the National Gallery and saw some Hungarian art, followed by a stroll down the hill and over the Chain Bridge, which was pedestrianised because there was a music festival on there today, which we stopped to look at.

My only gripe about the city is that you have to pay for ALL toilets and there are no water fountains.

Today’s quiz: From which iconic 80s film are our are gallery poses? Clue: The Smiths - Please please please let me get what I want should be playing in the background.もっと詳しく

Budapest - Day 2

Today was chock-a-block with activities. We woke up early at 7am in order to make the most of it. We got to Buda Castle for about 9am and got the Castle Bus around the castle area and had breakfast at a cafe. We visited the Fisherman’s Bastion, Mary Magdalene Tower and generally took in the whole area.

We then jumped on the bus and headed to the COSPA Science Museum which had loads of experiments and games, plus an Escape Room - in the home of Escape Rooms! It was classed as one of the hard ones, but we finished it! Hooray!

Next we had something to eat and then got the tram to the Lukacs Spa where we relaxed 😎 in the saunas and unwound before coming home.

Tomorrow we have to leave for Vienna at 5pm on the Railjet train... the trains are getting better the more north we go!もっと詳しく

Final hours in Budapest

Today was our last half day in Budapest so we got up early and took our stuff to the train station to store it in the lockers for the day.

We first caught the bus to the National Fine Art Museum and spent a couple of hours looking around the permanent exhibition.

Next we travelled to the Groupama Stadium for the obligatory football photo before heading into town for lunch.

We had lunch in the trendy area where all the ruin pubs are located at a place that had loads of different street food trucks where you could pick and choose your food and then all eat together. Alex had a vegan burger and sweet potato fries, Elena and I had Hungarian dumplings with chicken and meat respectively.

After we visited Szimpla Kurt, the most famous ruin pub, and then we went to the station to collect our luggage and get on the superb Railjet train to Austria 🇦🇹 with WiFi and charging plugs on board.もっと詳しく

Wien

Vienna is a simply stunning city. We spent the day in awe of the buildings and architecture.

We visited the Albertina first, which houses some of the best art from the past 100 years. I really didn’t know where to look!

Next was the Vienna National Library which was a sight to behold with the amazing frescoes.

After we looked around the Imperial Treasury with all the jewels, crowns and finery from the Austrian monarchy.

Next was Stephansdom. The main Cathedral in the centre of Vienna with it’s gothic architecture.

Then we started the hop on/off bus tour, which we can do the rest of tomorrow. Another full day and really not enough time here.

We leave for Prague at 17h tomorrow for the final leg of our trip. 😭もっと詳しく

旅行者Will you get to see Schönbrunn Palace while you're there? Its really stunning but might be expensive. The Art Gallery , Library and Cathedral all look amazing! xx

Goodbye Austria... Hello Czech Republic

Our last day in Vienna started really early with breakfast at the hotel then we went to the train station to drop off our bags.

We walked to the Upper Belvedere first, which houses some of the most iconic art from the past century including The Kiss by Gustav Klimt.

Next we got on the bus and headed to the House of Music 🎶 with many interactive exhibits. We easily could have spent 4 hours inside, but we didn’t have the time because we had one entrance ticket left on our Vienna FlexiPass, but only 2 hours to use it, so we got back on the bus and went to the MOMOK - the Vienna Museum of Modern Art.

It wasn’t as good as we hoped, because a lot of the exhibits were just tooo modern and the stuff we wanted to see, the Lichtensteins and Warhols, were in the archives and not on display. There was some good stuff there though.

Finally we got back on the bus and went to the train station where we boarded the train to Prague and we’ve just crossed the border into the Czech Republic 🇨🇿. We’ll arrive in Prague just after 21h for the final couple of days of our trip before flying home on Sunday morning.もっと詳しく

旅行者 No. We had interrailing passes, so all trains are included on that, but they’re not expensive in Eastern Europe anyway. We had to pay extra for the sleeper, 10€ per bed, and some require reservations.

Arrival in Prague

There were some lovely sights from the train. A red sunset and quaint villages. It was a painless arrival and check in at the last hostel and now we’re in bed ready for an early-ish start tomorrow.

Night at the Opera

Our first day in Prague consisted of a walk around the old town taking in the Astronomical clock at 11am followed by the Charles Bridge and Jewish Quarter before heading back to the clock to go up the tower and take a tour.

We had a late lunch at Café Louvre before going back to our hostel to shower and change before heading out to the Estates Theatre for the Opera of Don Giovanni, which we watched from our private box (thanks Grandma).

Prague Castle

Today we spent the day exploring Prague Castle. Like Buda Castle, there are several buildings and monuments within a walled area, so it took a fair few hours to get around.

We went to the Cathedral first, then took the Castle tour followed by a walk down Golden Lane and a visit to some old residences.

After that we were tired and hungry so we went for dinner at a Czech restaurant before getting a tram back over the river.

Before heading back to the hostel we got a pedalo on the river and saw the Dancing House and other sights from a riverside perspective.

Tomorrow we’re up early to go to the airport for our trip home. I’ve been notified of strikes at Barcelona, so I hope it doesn’t cause problems...もっと詳しく

On our way home...

We left Prague early on the 8am bus to the airport and caught our flight to Barcelona. We are currently waiting in Barcelona Airport for our flight to Tenerife North, which is due to take off at 17:40, however there are ground strikes today, so let’s hope they don’t cause any problems.

Home at last

We got home safe and sound after a long, but uneventful journey despite the strikes in Barcelona.

Now time to relax and get ready for work in September!
That was some trip, well done ....
