    One more sleep!

    5 de agosto de 2019, España ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Sooo much to do and so little time. Tomorrow morning we leave for the airport and Elena’s things need to be sorted out because she’s straight off to Canada when we return. Busy day sorting out paperwork ahead!Leer más

  • Barcelona

    6 de agosto de 2019, España ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Day 1... still in Spain, but after the flight and checking in to our hostel we took a stroll to La Boquería, a large food market off La Rambla, and plus it was nice to have the opportunity to catch up with our old friend, Federica, who took us for pinxos in Poble Sec. We treated ourselves to some BIG beers before heading back to the hostel for a well-earned sleep. The room is airconditioned, so we will sleep well. 👍Leer más

  • Made it to Asia!

    7 de agosto de 2019, Turquía ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

I’ve wanted to come to Istanbul for years and now I can finally tick it off my bucket list. We have just got through passport control at SAW airport and now we’re on the HavaBus heading towards the Bosphorus ferry. If we’re lucky we’ll get to watch sunset on it. Photos of Elena sketching at the airport, a view of Istanbul and the Bosporus meeting the Marmaray Sea and on the HavaBus outside the airport. Next update when we get to the hostel...Leer más

  • Grand Bazaar, Blue Mosque & Hagia Sofia

    8 de agosto de 2019, Turquía ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Had a busy morning... got up early and headed straight out after breakfast. We hit the Grand Bazaar early to buy our headscarves and after haggling a bargain we went to reserve our sleeper for the train to Sofia on Saturday.

Next, we made our way back to Sultanahmet and visited the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia. Here are a few photos from me.

    Lunch soon, then more sightseeing...

  • Knackered

    8 de agosto de 2019, Turquía ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Got back to the hostel at 19:30h after walking around Topkapi Palace after lunch and poor Alex is shattered. She’s crashed out and Elena is relaxing so I’ve come to watch the sunset over the Bosphorus.

Quiz: How many ‘Elenas’ can you spot in the panorama?

  • Basillica Cistern & Galata Tower

    9 de agosto de 2019, Turquía ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Our first stop this morning was the Basillica Cistern, which is a Roman water storage tank measuring nearly 10,000 m2. It was impressive, but also 😎 cool out of the sun for a bit!

We then got a tram to the Spice Bazaar, which Alex has photos of, and finished the day with a walk over the Galata Bridge and the Golden Horn to climb up the Galata Tower and see all of İstanbul from above.

Once again, the panoramas have the quiz...

    9 de agosto de 2019, Turquía ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Throughout the trip there have been moments full of wonder, adventure and magic, but unfortunately that doesn’t last forever. Our bodies need replenishment & rest. Because of that, I am able to present you this collection I call “Sleeping Souls”

    Enjoy

Ps. I am sure soon, photos like these of me will appear on the page and I will be publicly humiliated too

  • Istanbul comes to an end

    10 de agosto de 2019, Turquía ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

After finishing our tour of The Bosphorus we got off the boat at Besiktas so that I could get an Armada Sur photo outside with my scarf. We then got the train back into town and had a walk through the Spice Bazaar up to Sultanahmet getting a pomegranate juice on the way, before returning to Sirkeci Station. Now we’re on the transfer bus heading for Halkalı station 🚉 about 50 mins away on the outskirts of Istanbul where we will catch the overnight train to Sofia in Bulgaria. The train leaves at 9:40pm and arrives just after 8am. We will need to wake up and show our passports at Kapikule, the border of Turkey and Bulgaria, at 2am-ish.Leer más

  • Sofia, Bulgaria

    11 de agosto de 2019, Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We arrived in Sofia 2 hours late, but that wasn’t a problem because our check in wasn’t until 1pm so we could take our time. We reserved our next train to Belgrade so that we knew it was ok and headed into the centre on the metro.

Arriving at the hostel we were hot and very sweaty after a day in Istanbul, train ride and hike in 32 degrees to the hostel. We were still an hour early though, so we went for a drink in the cafe downstairs to wait it out.

Along came 1pm and we went into the hostel, but no one could get hold of the reservations guy! An hour later he finally arrived with the excuse that he’d been at his mate’s birthday party the night before and woke up late. He gave us a 4 bed room to ourselves to make up for the inconvenience.

Hot and very sweaty, all we wanted was a shower, but the water had gone off! We were told it wouldn’t be on until 6pm so we had to go ‘sightseeing’ to kill time... going in and out of air-conditioned shops to make it bearable.

We headed back to the hostel at 6pm and... YES! Water!

Now we are showered... and it’s never felt so good! Just waiting for our clothes to wash now, as there’s a machine here, and then we’ll go out to eat. 👍

  • Churches, Churches, Churches...

    12 de agosto de 2019, Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

No, not the band. Sofia is Church capital! Most charge you to take photos, but we managed to do some sneaky ones.

Plus another panorama outside the oldest church in Sofia, St Sofia Church. The city is named after it and it was first built in 5 A.D.

The big one in the background with gold dome is the Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral

  • Entering Serbia

    13 de agosto de 2019, Bulgaria ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

  • Still on the train...

    13 de agosto de 2019, Serbia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

We were supposed to arrive almost an hour ago, yet we’re still 1 hour from Belgrade on what has to be the slowest and hottest train in the world.

It has a disgusting toilet and no aircon too, with no running water in the toilet to neither flush nor wash hands. 🥵

We stopped at Nis for about 40 mins so people could refill water bottles.

  • Cloudy Belgrade

    14 de agosto de 2019, Serbia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Belgrade has turned out to be one of the best stops so far. We wish we had another night here.

The apartment we had for the night was gorgeous and the shower was simply fantastic. Our host, Borjan, was really nice. He picked us up from the train and even drove us to the other station so that I could buy tickets. Tonight he is going to take us to the station and he’s storing our luggage for us so that we can go out without the burden of lugging around our bags.

Belgrade is a beautiful city, and the fact it’s a cloudy day means we aren’t sweating 😅 It’s lovely to not be pouring in sweat for a change.

We visited the fort overlooking the Danube and St. Michael’s Cathedral, which was simply stunning.

Tonight we are supposed to be taking to night train directly to Ljubljana, but if it’s as slow as the last one, we may skip Slovenia and go straight to Zagreb. Let’s see how it goes...

  • Another train drama in Serbia

    14 de agosto de 2019, Serbia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We got on the night train to Ljubljana at 9pm after our wonderful host, Borjan, dropped us off at the station.

We got on the train at 9pm and although there were no sleeping cars as such, we had a cabin to ourselves and we worked out that the chairs pulled out to make beds!

We started getting ready for bed about 10pm, but at 10:45pm the train stopped at what we thought was a station and everyone seemed to be more chatty than normal for this hour.... well, it turns out that the there was a car on the tracks and looking out of the windows, there are blue flashing lights from police, ambulance, fire service or all three at the front of the train. We don’t know yet if we’ve hit anything or anyone or what’s going on.

Update later... but I think we’ll definitely be giving Slovenia a miss because I foresee a huge delay. I just hope no one has been hurt...

UPDATE: A car was driving over the level crossing (there are loads of them here) and the train hit the front of it. There was a 38 year-old man driving who has been seriously hurt and taken to hospital. I’ve no idea why he was on the crossing... had the lights failed, or had he overshot them, or tried to play chicken, or maybe been on the track intentionally... who knows.

  • Skipped Ljubljana... straight to Zagreb

    15 de agosto de 2019, Croacia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Because of the accident last night our train was delayed by a couple of hours so we decided to get off at Zagreb instead.

We arrived at 7am at the station, almost missing our stop. As we pulled into the station we frantically grabbed our stuff and jumped off the train in our pyjamas, getting changed on the platform. We got the tram to the hostel and were allowed to check in early, so now we have had a chance to shower, change and have a bit of a rest before we go out exploring later.Leer más

  • Crazy pidgeon man

    15 de agosto de 2019, Croacia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

This afternoon we strolled around getting to know the city. We stopped in a square with an old Croatian man who was feeding the pidgeons and it was like a scene from Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’. The statue didn’t look too impressed by their presence either. When kids chased the birds the old man ranted at them! It was really funny.

We found the Grounded Sun. This s is the centre part of a city-wide art installation of the solar system which is made to scale. All around the city, from this point, the other planets can be found in an exact scale compared to this sun and the exact distance from it.

We walked up to the station and got our reservation for the next train to Budapest on Saturday and ate at a Chinese restaurant close by before walking back to the hostel.

  • Zagreb - Day 2

    16 de agosto de 2019, Croacia ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

We started the day off with a lunch of Struckli. This was a type of ‘lasagne’ that is made by layering a Croatian pasta dough with cottage cheese and other things, depending on your preference and then baking it in the oven. It’s a local dish to Zagreb and was lovely!

Next we went to the Nikola Tesla Museum where we had a tour of a mine and watched some of Tesla’s experiments in a demonstration.

Then we went up Zagreb 360 which is an observation platform where you can view the whole city.

After that we visited an old department store called Nama. The stuff they sold resembled a Chinese shop, but the architecture was art nouveau, so it was worth going inside just for that.

Finally we took a stroll through the old WW2 bunker tunnels that connect various parts of the city. We followed our noses and found a fantastic restaurant for dinner called Konoba Didov San. We went just at the right time because after we got there, they started turning people away because they were so full. The food was amazing.
