    Glodok - Chinatown - Part 1

    January 13, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

I finally found some time to head into Jakarta. At first I visited Chinatown and for the first time, I actually really felt like being in Asia in Jakarta. Even though the area is quite small, there are some markets, temples and restaurants to discover.Read more

  • Cikini

    January 13, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

For the first time, I took the bus - the Transjakarta Bus - which actually has its own line and it works! It's really fast. I went to a little area called Cikini and had coffee at the famous Bakoel Coffie place. Afterwards I walked around a bit and did some trips on scooter taxis. All in all, I got to see a lot of Jakarta today, and I am really quite pleased with myself :-)Read more

  • Stand up comedy show in Kemang

    January 15, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Had a great time last night at my first stand up comedy show in Indonesia. The show was called "Story Party Jakarta" which dealt with supposedly true dating stories (https://www.facebook.com/events/460725080956380/) It was a very interesting experience, as the crowd was mainly Indonesian, but the comedians were from the US, Australia and Tansania and all living in Germany. I don't think I've ever heard anybody speak so openly about the most intimite details about dating and sex, some of what left even me quite stunned. However, I haven't laughed as much in a life time and I sure recommend you go and see them as they are touring the world at the moment.Read more

  • Going out in Kemang

    January 26, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

For the first time since I moved to Indonesia I got the chance to go out with my friends Henny and Carmi. (We were later joined by further Indonesian friends). We met at my place and then took a taxi to a bar called Eastern Promises. The name is quite fitting when it comes to aging Western men as it was croweded with bald, overweight Australians who were surrounded by suspiciously looking women - who were either there to find a providor or two earn some money that night. For most of the time we seemed to be the only "normal" people in the room. Later on, there were more young people who - just like us - had just come to enjoy the live music and dance. The band playing did quite a good job and the DJ wasn't bad either. Altogether, we really enjoyed ourselves and had a great time. We're certainly going to do that again!Read more

  • Jakarta Selatan - Menteng

    January 28, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

I would have never imagined this city to be so exciting. There are so many areas, so many places, so many little details to discover. Today I went exploring the neighbourhood in which former President Obama lived for four years when he was a child. It's a mixture of sky scrapers, parks, cafés and canals.Read more

  • Plaza Senaya

    January 28, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

This fancy mall offers the most luxurious goods... not that I need or want any of them, but it's still interesting to see. It's pretty symbolic of Indonesian society.... some people can afford these goods while most Indonesians won't even be allowed inside the mall. I mainly went there to dine and to buy wine... but ended up not buying any.. at 22 Euro for one bottle of white wine :-(Read more

  • Healthy eating

    January 30, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today I met with two German teachers from the Lycée Francais at another huge mall midway between their school and ours. We're organizing visits and exchanges between their students and ours. Used the chance to try out some vegetarian and vegan food at this new cute place. What a feast! I forgot what it feels like to eat healthy.... so I even managed to leave the mall without buying my favorite German treat... TOFFIFEE. It's good to know where to get it though... 😊Read more

  • Block M (Part 1)

    February 4, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Together with my friends and collegues Birte and Sophie, I went exploring another interesting area in Southern Jakarta called Block M. It's an area which is characterized by shopping malls, parks, restaurants and cafés and it is generally a very bright and colorful area. We happened to come across a coffee fair and I was able to fill up my stock. We also found a pleasant restaurant which served yummy Indonesian food. Before heading home, we stopped at the animal markt which was interesting but also very depressing as animals are held under dreadful conditions in small cages.Read more

  • After Jokowi's visit

    April 28, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

This saturday I had an appointement down town and decided to use the opportunity to finally visit one of Jakarta's most famous landmarks, the Monas (Monumen Nasional). What I wasn't aware of was that President Jokowi had had the same idea which is why the place was packed with people wearing mainly red and white clothes in honor of the Indonesian flag. It was an interesting sight but also very depressing as people were apparently given free cardboard boxes of neatly packed food and water - all wrapped in layers and layers of plastic. What was left was plastic garbage everywhere! People just left it where they had had a picknick... It took me over an hour to finally find a grab car to take me back to BSD as - of course - everybody was leaving at the same time, but it was worth the trouble. A very Indonesian experiences with lots of national pride, singing and red balloons.Read more

  • Kota Tua Jakarta

    June 3, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Finally, my parents came to visit, so we spent a day in Jakarta. First we went to visit Istiqlal Mosque, the biggest mosque in South-East Asia, then to Sunda Kelapa – the old harbour and last but not least to Kota Tua, the old town where we had cocktails at the famous Batavia Café.Read more

  • Kota Tua

    September 16, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Our last step was Kota Tua, the old part of Jakarta where you can find some restored buildings from Colonial times. The area is always crowded, especially on Sundays with locals who come here to take selfies, rent colourful bikes or listen to one of the many bands playing in the streets. You can also enjoy a heavily priced drink at Café Batavia which overlooks the main square.Read more

  • Centre Culturel Francais, Jakarta

    September 21, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

One friday night, Sophie and I went to the Centre Culturel Francais in Menteng to visit a film festival. On the way, we got stuck in traffic, got lost trying to find a wash room and ended up having the most delicious street food ever. We did make it to the centre though in the end....Read more
