    Labuan Bajo

    July 31, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

I had one day in Labuan Bajo by myself which I used to enjoy the view of the harbour from a really nice coffee place and a stroll around the kampung next to the harbour. It's a great place to explore local life. I really enjoyed chatting with the locals and taking photos.Read more

  • Labuan Bajo to Ruteng

    August 1, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Finally reunited with Tamara and her children, we started our road trip across Flores. Our first stop was at a waterfall where we enjoyed the fresh water and I had my first Indo Mie in two years :-) . We later stopped at a small market where we had some fruit and talked with the locals.Read more

  • Ruteng to Bajawa

    August 2, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The next day we continued our journey from Ruteng to Bajawa where we stayed two nights. We saw some more ricefields, had the chance to taste local rice wine (no need to do that again though), met our driver's family and spent some time on a stunning black beach on the southside of Flores.Read more

  • Enjoying the beautiful views

    August 2, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We spent a lot of time on that black sand beach and I went for a stroll to take some photos of the fisher boats. The others went swimming instead. Later, we continued to Bajawa. We stopped several times to enjoy the view and get a glimpse of local life. Bajawa was - like Ruteng - in the mountains and thus much cooler then the coastal areas. We were all pretty cold and glad to be able to take a hot shower at our accomodation.Read more

  • Visiting the market in Bajawa

    August 3, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Our third day startet with a visit of a local market. It was definately the cleanest and neatest market I have ever seen in Indonesia. We bought a lot of fruit for our picknick later that day.

  • Visiting traditional villages

    August 3, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After shopping at the market, we visited two traditional villages around Bajawa. We were able to get a glimpse of how people around Bajawa have been living for hundreds of years. The villagers still weave scarves and other clothes which they wear on special occations or sell to tourists.Read more

  • Enjoying Malanage Hot Springs

    August 3, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

After visiting the villages, we went to Malanage Hot Springs where we stayed for hours and enjoyed the hot water or cooled us down further along in the river. Especially the kids loved this experience! There weren't many tourists and later we were joined by many locals who seemed to have as much fun as we did!Read more

  • What a sight!

    August 3, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

On our way back to Bajawa, Roy, our driver suddenly had the idea to take us up to a viewpoint from which you can watch the sunset behind Gunung Inerie with the ocean in the background. It took us ages to arrive and it was freezing cold when we got out of the car, especially because there was a very cold wind, but it was all worth it! We were extremely lucky as we arrived only minutes before the sun disappeared behind the clouds. What a breathtaking sight!Read more

  • More hot springs

    August 4, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

This was a similar experience to the one of the day before, but these springs were less natural and far bigger than the ones in Malanage. We still had a great time though.

  • Arriving in Riung

    August 4, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

After a long and quite bumpy ride we finally arrived in Riung, which is not a city, but simply an area with a small fishing village as its center. We just arrived in time to see the sun set at the harbour where we had delicious food in a small restaurant.Read more

  • The local market in Riung

    August 5, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Before starting our day trip around the famous 17 islands, we went to the local market to buy our daily ration of fruit. Since there were so few tourists it was a very authentic experience which we enjoyed a lot.Read more

  • Day trip to 17 Islands

    August 5, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Once on the boat we headed towards the first island we were to visit, stopping close by to do some snorkeling. Later, our captain prepared a hearty and yummy lunch for us.

  • Snorkeling at 17 Islands

    August 5, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Though not comparable to Raja Ampat or Komodo, snorkeling around 17 Islands was fun. The water was clear and I did see some fish I hadn't seen before like for example some box fish.

  • Bats

    August 5, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We knew we were going to see bats, but we had no idea how many of them we would see. Once we were the only ones around, our captain turned on the motor and made a really loud noise which scared the bats in such a way that a lot of them left the trees and looked for a quieter place. Not a very animal-friendly thing to do and if asked we would have certainly told him not to do that, but I have to admit, it was quite a sight.Read more

  • At the blue pebbled beach

    August 6, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

The next morning we spent a lot of hours in the car again on our way across the island to a small town called Moni. On the way we stopped at the so-called blue pebbled beach. It was kinf of nice, but unfortuately, most of the pebbles have been already collected to be sold to tourists or to be shipped to Bali. What might be a lucrative idea now will probably keep the tourists from coming in the future...Read more

  • Sunrise at Kelimutu

    August 7, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We got up at 4 am, drove uphill to stop as close as possible to Gunung Kelimutu and then hiked up to the viewpoint. It was quite tiring especially after such a short night, but it was definately worth the effort.Read more
