  • Saturday night shopping

    November 4, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Since I needed another 20 coat hangers to be able to store my newly arrived clothes in my closet, I went for a quick Saturday night shopping trip to living world mall in Alam Sutera. It's one of the biggest malls in the area and always very crowded. Indonesians love heading out to the malls (It's called malling) to escape the heat and the dust. The best thing about this mall is its food court with its large variety of restaurants. There is always something new to try. This time I had Japanese food and - I simply couldn't resist - a jumbo mango bomb for dessert 😍😋Read more

  • Birthdays and Farewells

    January 19, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Our school is quite small and we're only about 50 teachers at our school, about 20 of whom are German. So, in general, colleagues, employees and members of the staff are much closer to each other than at a typical school in Germany. Which means that if you're having a party, you basically invite everyone who's working at your school. Last week, the first big birthday/farewell party (our interns are leaving us) took place - at the pool of our school. We also went out for Thai food one night... but see for yourselves :-)Read more

  • Birthdays and Farewell part 2

    January 19, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Germans and Indonesians alike really enjoyed our little pool party. We also had some suprise guests - at least 15 frogs joined us later that night :-) The food, which was prepared by Ibu Har, was very tasty like alwas - and everybody seemed to enjoy the get together. The later the evening the more creative we became concerning dance mooves and headgear.Read more

  • Earthquake

    January 23, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

So that's what it feels like when the earth is shaking 😯. Pretty scary experience especially when you are teaching on the second floor. Instead of hiding underneath the tables - as we were supposed to - everybody quickly left the building. Fortunately nobody got hurt. We were all sent home though as part of security measures.Read more

  • Scarcely escaped death...

    February 3, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Yesterday I discovered this little bugger...was able to kill it before it bit or stung me.... Not really sure what it is but it does look like some kind of scorpion

  • Finally working out at the gym

    May 17, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

So, two weeks ago I finally decided to become member of a gym... I had the choice of two different ones, one of which was much closer than this one, but I really didn't feel comfortable there. Gyms in Indonesia are kind of funny... They seem to be like their Western counterparts but then they aren't. For instance, every bike has got a TV but non of them work...
Anyway, the yoga classes are alright and although I need at least about 15 minutes to get there, the location is worth it. The Breeze is like an outdoor food courts with this artificial pond/lake, a bowling center, the gym and a stage where local musicians perform. It's a strange place but in a good way. I'm starting to really like it.

  • Ramadan decoration

    May 17, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

During Ramadan, Indonesians love to decorate houses, flats, hotels and shopping malls with stereotypical oriental decoration (let’s say, the Basilius Cathedral could be taken for a Mosque). Of course, I LOVE IT!Read more

  • 3rd of October at Kempinski Hotel

    October 3, 2018 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

We were all looking forward to the anual reception by the German embassador at Kempinski Hotel where there was free German food and drinks. Our intern Florian and I shared a taxi.... the taxi couldn't find the entrance so we were left beneath the hotel and had to enter together with the staff. We then followed one of them who took us to the Great Ballroom. So, no red carpet for us..... The rest of the evening was great, but unfortunately, the food was gone too soon.Read more

  • School life

    February 15, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

Science fair... what a great way to motivate students! The last picture shows the advertisements my grade 8 students created for our school. Presently on display at our stand at Didakta.

  • 24 hour holiday

    February 16, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Lucky me! In December, in the tombola at Christkindl Market, I won a voucher for a one-night-stay at this 4 star hotel including breakfast. So I took my friend Tanja and enjoyed the beautiful pool area and delicious food. Since it only took us 25 minutes to get there, we'll be back for sure.Read more

  • Trying out a new coffee shop

    February 18, 2019 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 30 °C

I had been wanting to try out this place for so long and yesterday, I finally did. It was definitely worth it. Wouldn't necessarily eat cake there but the coffee and juice were amazing and the staff was super friendly. The interior is very inviting, too.Read more
