    At the face of the glacier, it is about the same height as a ten storey building. You hear the creaking and then a sound like a rifle shot, soon after a chunk of ice falls off the face. This is called calving and is the source of all the floating ice in the water. Fresh glacial ice looks turquoise in colour. The dark patches are stone and earth which have been eroded by the glacier's movement.Read more
