    This mediaeval town has a 13-14th century fortress guarding a narrow valley which linked Eastern Europe with the Middle East. The Tsarevets Fortress was built between 1185-1393 and housed the royal palaces. It was the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and has many famous palaces. During the Middle Ages, the town was a main European centre of culture giving its name to art and literature.

    Veliko Tarnovo is built along the steep valley slopes. The town now attracts many visitors because of its unique architecture.
