Mud bath and Cicadas

We started the day with a huge breakfast, provided by our camp host at Oasis Camp, which was very much needed before the tough day ahead. Smartly, we packed up the leftovers so we’d have a solid lunch ready to go. A wise move, as the day kicked off with a relentless 30km climb right out of the gate!

​To cover some ground early on, we spent the first stretch riding on the main road. It definitely kept us on our toes, mostly thanks to some pretty wild and risky overtaking manoeuvres from the passing traffic 😅.

But before long, we turned off the tarmac and onto what was easily the worst, most unholy road surface we’ve encountered yet, continuing our trek steadily uphill.
​As we climbed, the surroundings kept evolving. We started off passing humble tin-house villages, which eventually yielded to lush green farmland with neat houses and proper roofs.

Around midday, we pulled over next to a picturesque field filled with sheep and donkeys to devour our breakfast leftovers.
​Refuelled, we pushed further up into the Dundori Forest. The forest was dense, quiet (except for the chirping of birds and noise of Cicadas), and wonderfully peaceful, with hardly a soul around. However, recent rain had turned the dirt tracks into thick, sticky mud, making the riding extremely slow going and turning every pedal stroke into a workout.
​Tired of slogging through the sludge, we decided to spice things up: we cut straight through the thick of the forest toward the nearest village to reconnect with the main route. It turned out to be the absolute best part of the day! From there, we were rewarded with a glorious, breezy downhill ride. Cruising slightly off the official KBO track meant the people we met were, if possible, even nicer and more curious to see us pass by.

​We eventually rolled into Maili Saba Camp, feeling fully accomplished after another big effort. We’re taking a rest day here tomorrow and are heading out on a game drive, which we couldn't be more excited for! 🦁 😴Read more
