    Cat cafe!!!

    Rich said he had a treat for me. I, having researched cat cafes prior (obviously) and under the impression Vienna's sole establishment was closed down, wondered what on earth he could be talking about.

    It was open. There were two Maine Coons SLEEPING UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE and a sleepy boi and a mean gal called Sonia and a big chonker called Thomas and it was a Chrimmus miracle.    Les mer

    Getting our bearings in Brno

    It's lovely here! A very scaleable city, everything seemed to be about 200m away. We dumped our bags at the accommodation (more on that later) and went out for a walk, then after seeing more in far less time that I'd planned (see 200m comment) stretched out with a drink in a very hip seeming place called SKOG but with that interesting Nordic slash through the O. I had the jasmine orange lemonade and it was delicious.Les mer

    Snack time

    The first few days we had tried the more efficient (time and price) method of having our biggest meal of the day at lunch. It worked well in that it's a much cheaper way to eat out, but as two idiot office workers used to skipping breakfast, having something perfunctory for lunch, and then a huge dinner, it was making us feel a bit (in my case a lot) queasy and it was cheating me out of dinner (cruel). We chucked that in today and it was probably for the best, this delicious cheesy jammy snack held us over until later.Les mer

    A Christmas market! This one had cute little yurt type tents, some with wood fires in them, and we gave mead a try - both traditional and a blackcurrant version. Afterwards we splashed out on a drink ar The Bar That Doesn't Exist and then dinner at Atilier, where we had probably the best service and butter we've received in a long time, and snails!Les mer

    Say what you will about tiny loft bedrooms in the 4th floor attic of heritage buildings with no lifts - I love them. This one had a double bed and a 150cm thing, which I colonised quickly as the reading nook. I tried very hard not to look at Richard when we discovered the bathroom was down a flight of stairs, lest I be withered to pieces. In unrelated news, I have now lost planning privileges, along with map privileges which disappeared following the Palmenhaus Incident. Yolo.Les mer

Staying in an awesome apartment in the old town, more on that tomorrow as right now we've got full tummies, half the Survivor finale to watch, and, if this morning is anything to go by, an early start.     11Me, the milk maid

    The apartment we are staying at has bikes so we made the most of them today, and in the morning that meant pushing them slowly through the central farmers market, including, inexplicably, a mango sighting. On the way back in the afternoon I got to use something I've been excited about at the market - the milk vending machine!

    You buy a plastic or a glass bottle from a vending machine (0.30/1€) and then fill it up with fresh raw milk at 10 cents per 100ml. Despite Rich being a big wary about how our bodies might react to milk so different to what we're used to, it's delicious and we haven't died yet.

    Also milk in Slovenian is melko and so this machine is called the melkomat and that's gold.    Les mer

    1Mum! A tiny street library at the castle!

    Ljubljana Castle

    A funicular took us 70m up to the castle overlooking the old town, which included a penitentiary, built to cater for the growing requirements after some legal changes in 1803 which clearly resulted in more lock ups.

    Its also where we met Friderik, the castle mascot! You can see a picture of him below, as well as a picture of Rich doing his best Friderik impression. So mousy. So delicate.    Les mer

    We checked out of our lovely old town apartment today, which I found on AirBnb. The host, Klemen, was a gem, and he's renting the place out on behalf of his brother, who is apparently a professional football player.

    It was an adorable, space efficient, fun place - the bed could fold up, the table folded down and could be moved along the wall on runners to do that in different areas, and lots of storage was hidden away cleverly.

    I can't take better photos than the ones online already so I've repurposed them here to give you an idea, with the exception of the last, which shows where the apartment is in relation to the street, Stari Trg - above the restaurant Landerik.    Les mer

    We then scampered 100m up and one street left to check in early at Kollman apartments, which over look the river. Our room features a king size bed with one (1) doona which is a real treat after the two single quilts we've been mucking about with until now. Rich says this place is finally up to the standards he deserves. Hurrah me.Les mer

    I bought an online game for us which, despite the pouring rain, we conquered today (gold medal baby!). It's kind of a scavenger hunt / tour, in that you get guided around some major and some hidden features of the city one hint at a time, with a feature of your destination unlocking the next clue. Lots of fun although in future we'd do it on our first day in a place as we did find ourselves covering old ground a bit.Les mer

    I'd had this restaurant on my list for a while and yup, having to wait a little for a table was worth it. We had a delicious beef stew and 10 čevapčiči in the most delicious Bosnian bread, servings so big we couldn't finish, plus drinks, for 19€ - the most wonderful value for money. Happy days!Les mer

    Occupied Ljubaljana

    Following our great success with the SecretCity trails puzzles, we thought we would test ourselves again with an escape room.
    'Occupied Ljubaljana' was the game and we had to escape our prison cell, find clues in the military office to help us escape the prison and get out of 1943 occupied Ljub.
    With a couple of handy nudges we crushed it and got out in 45mins. The apparent success rate for escape under the hour is 40% so go us.    Les mer

    We picked up Monty today (his full name is Skoda Fabia, Monte Carlo edition) and drove in the pissing rain to Piran, on the very western tip of the country, via mostly highway, Koper, Izola, and, briefly, an olive grove - my bad lol.Les mer
