Trying to get out the door

    21 avril 2019, Australie ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Despite the well established 4am wakeup call Chatty Kathy here got us into bed at 1.30am after an away game win and some ill advised uber eats. I had the morning scheduled to the minute but one of us is still drunk and one of us is a cat so naturally we are behind but it's salvageable. Bye B, be good for Uncle Ben!En savoir plus

    21 avril 2019, Australie ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Richard gambled on this seat allocation for MEL-SING and gosh it's worked out a treat. 👌

  • First massage

    22 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

30 minute foot reflexology then 60 minute full body Thai massage, where got essentially harassed with elbows and for some brief yet exciting spells, had my lovely lady standing and crawling on me. The Ralph Wiggums 'I'm in danger' meme came to mind at the point I had my hands behind my head and she got a bit krav maga on me, but overall a lovely experience, would, and intend, to do again.En savoir plus

  • Exploring old Phuket Town

    22 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Lunch and a wander after massages, this place is so cute. Richard keen to visit Patong tonight so I'm making the most of somewhere relatively quiet...im willing to be proven wrong but my sense is that place will be a zoo and it's not my scene. Anyway, yolo.

We ate lunch at The Charm, which is in a building more than a century old with lots of antiques to match, as the old guy running it was quite happy to chat to Rich about but wasn't too fussed with me. I didn't mind as he'd plonked a fan in front of us earlier so I was already his loyal servant for life.

The pink building in the pictures is our accommodation. The model in front of the cream building is me - talcum powered to the hilt and surprisingly adjusted to this heat.

  • Here be dragons

    23 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Spent our last morning in Phuket Old Town before heading up to Khao Lak having breakfast at Bookhemian (book shop cafe, clever sliding tables), and perfecting the 'look here' picture pose at the dragon statue and a quirky old museum underneath a hotel. Then we went to the cat cafe because duh, Richard has the good pics though so I'll post those later. Currently en route, can't wait for a swim.En savoir plus

  • Cat Cafes are our greatest invention

    23 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Hnnngghgghgghh god I love cat cafes. The lil ginger boy was the smooshiest and I love him and I named him Archie and tbh probably over-bonded. I asked him if he knew B but got no recognition out of the photo line up. Which confirms my fears that his disguise skills have advanced and he is evading attention for sinister purposes. Rich was very taken with the BIG BOI who must have a bit of Maine Coon in him, and the zonked out snoozers on the glass shelf. Cat Cafes RULE.En savoir plus

  • My schedule says relax

    24 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

So we will. We got chatting to a guy from Melbourne (the first and last bit of chatting I hope) last night who has been here before and offered the incredibly useful tip that the body of water between this skinny peninsula and the town is traversable in low tide, so rather than taking a 30 minute taxi to go all the way back up and down, you can just hop across in a 10 minute walk. Nice. Anyway we'll have a go later, for now it's a WWII biography, F1 podcast (we are sticking very closely to form) and I plan to drag us 600m up the beach for lunch.En savoir plus

  • Papaya salad

    24 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

We walked up the beach for lunch, as it seems a few Australians have done before us, from the amount of times the guy at the restaurant asked if we were enjoying our 'bonza tucker' and 'bloody cold beer' - Queenslanders truly have a lot to answer for. Finally got to order the papaya salad but it's not really for me. The three tiny puppies running around got 5 stars though.En savoir plus

  • Tour de Khao Lak

    27 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

The last few days have been spent doing sweet bugger all, reading and swimming, and a moderately disastrous paddle around in sea kayaks which resulted in what Rich insists on calling SunglassesGate. Last night we had dinner at the resort, the highlight of which was spying a little kitty prawling high in the ceiling beams, doing laps of the round room.

Today we took some bicycles out for what was going to be a relaxed meander and ended up being about 10km round trip - I've never sweated more but it was great fun, topped off by a wet crossing with the bikes over our shoulders through a short channel of water to do the short cut home. Very extreme and off road of us.

We've just had a massage - my lady seemed quite keen to get my tricep off the bone - and are about to get picked up by tuk tuk from a restaurant about 15 minutes away. It's called Pam's and it's run by a northern Thai woman and a European man. Hopefully good!

The smell I'll associate with Thailand is lemon grass - it's the cold drink you get as welcome, impregnated in the icy towels you get at dinner, and generally pretty bloody overpowering, but it could be worse.

  • Pam is a legend

    27 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ 🌧 30 °C

Best meal we have had, amazing hospitality, and the pick up, in a typical Ute bench arrangement, was so convenient. I especially loved her print out about her garden and dogs, pictured below.

We had steamed fish, stir fried prawns, chicken, spring rolls, and a delicious hot dessert of sweet banana and silky coconut milk. We gave the British couple at the table next to us a lift back as they didn't know about the free transfer.

Settling in with a beer now to watch F1 qualifying and will have a night swim after. Hurrah!

  • Puppers

    28 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Another bike trip today as it's overcast and relatively cool - met some lovely doggos at lunch and explored another sobering reminder of the incredible damage sustained by this area and people in the 2004 tsunami. Yesterday we visited the Tsunami Memorial to learn more and it's truly extraordinary how much resilience has been shown to rebuild, revegetate, and renew.En savoir plus

  • A soggy walk

    30 avril 2019, Thaïlande ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We saved visiting the fancy beach club, KOKULO, until the last full day, which, hilariously, coincided with an absolutely torrential downpour which caused a bit of flash flooding and made our decision to walk the few km there pretty damp!

It was a shame to miss the beach club in full force but sloshing through the flooded streets getting battered by rain was a funny experience and I don't regret it.

There were three Korean couples there accompanied by a videographer documenting their trip with some extremeeee candids, which was quite entertaining.

After we got back to the hotel we found that ceiling kitty has a whole family, including two babbies, living in a duct, like something out of red dwarf. The fam was snoozing on the staircase but ran off when humans arrived, but the little grey dear got left behind and was very spooked. I wanted to carry him up to mum but figured that was probably a good way to get some money out of travel insurance so left him alone.
