  • Day 12

    August 13 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 75 °F

I'm only a couple hundred miles from the end, but it looks like the roads I need to take are going to shove me into another lightning storm, so I'm stopping early again.

I broke today. Sobbing, bawling, screaming. I almost threw down the bike and walked away. But I didn't. I just screamed it out and kept riding. There's an icepick in my left knee, I can't feel my butt, and the crick between my shoulder blades goes all the way through to my chest.

    The joys of motorcycling.

Bright side, a friend's dad found me at a gas station in Indiana and someone was just on the corner with a Hoka Hey sign. Makes me want to push through the night, but I know better. I'll finish in the morning. 💪

  • Day 11

    August 12 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

I can't ride anymore. I'm about to run smack into a lightning storm; the roads are already wet. I've already fallen asleep today. Calling it a night. It will probably mean that I won't finish tomorrow, but I'd rather be alive. If I stay where I am I shouldn't hit any weather tonight.

When I say fall asleep, I don't really go to sleep. It's like my brain goes off on its own while my body continues to control the bike. To the point that my body turned the bike into a parking lot today because my brain thought the friends I was riding with had stopped for gas and we needed to turn around to find them. 😳

    Good night

  • Day 10

    August 11 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 82 °F

Had to stop an hour early. Was falling asleep even while talking to myself.

Today I hit the physical wall. Maybe it was because of the third day in a row of over 100 degrees heat. Maybe it was because it's day 10 of this craziness. Either way, I fell asleep at least twice while riding and came to while drifting into the other lane. Luckily nobody was around and I was going pretty slow I didn't have the cruise control on. I got very lucky and I knew it. So I'm stopping an hour early tonight to get extra sleep. This is not worth dying over or destroying Michael.

104 today. Completely wiped me out. Have to stop. Falling asleep. Plus, my next road is 337, one of the Twisted Sisters. Absolutely not doing that tonight.

Glad to be in OK and TX where the speed limits let you get somewhere. Even stopping early, I still had my longest day.

Still haven't seen any other riders, but Shell station attendant asked if I was doing the Hoka Hey. The first wave hit him earlier. J gave him my card with the tracker link so he could see when the bikes were headed towards him. Nice guy.

I really wish the deer would leave me alone. Not close today, just everywhere.

I don't smell like dog food anymore. I smell like dogfood that's been soaked in hazelnut flavored coffee. I thought I put water in my coffee mug, which I usually do, and dumped it on my head for cooling. 🤦. Now I stink and stick to everything 🤣😔

  • Day 6

    August 7 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 75 °F

I didn't know when it was going to happen but I knew it was going to eventually. the mental fog hit me today like a fucking brick wall. it was like I forgot how to read. I was jumbling my numbers. I couldn't tell left from right. I missed almost every turn, 10 miles the wrong way on switchbacks once. It was horrible.

I had several close calls today. First, just like yesterday, I immediately found myself on extremely twisty roads with tree limbs gravel mud leaves you name it everywhere. My rear wheel got squirrely I don't know how many times. I missed a deer by one of its hairs. I could smell it. In the dark I went into a turn way too hot and...well, let's not say that out loud.

Anyway, with all the mistakes I made, I figure I lost at least a couple of hours on whoever's in front of me.

That is, until I called one of the organizers tonight because I hit an unmarked detour. When I asked where I should go, she said she didn't know. I was the first one to reach it. No way I still don't believe her. Anyway, I made it through the detour and I'm back on the proper road where I found a little place to tuck away for a few hours.

No smiles today. Lots of screaming. Tomorrow will be better.

P.S.: Remember in Forrest Gump how Lieutenant Dan told them to take care of their feet? Well, I should have listened. Tonight's the first night I've taken off my socks. And since my boots and insoles were saturated yesterday and I slept in them last night, my tootsies are not up to par. I've dusted them with Gold Bond powder to help the skin dry out, and they should be good in the morning. No worries.

P.P.S.: Why do I smell like dog food? I hope there aren't any coyotes out here 😳

  • Day 5

    August 6 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Twisties. All. Day. Long. I'm exhausted.

Right out of my country club parking lot sleep spot, it was twisties. On blacktop roads that eat your headlights. In fog so thick it felt like rain. And no roads had any paint. I literally had to stop several times to figure out where the road went 🤣😳

And I'm soaked. Terribly heavy rain and lightning hit me at 2000 on the nose and lasted for the next 30 minutes. I made it to dry roads when the second wave hit me...and it felt like a real wave hit me. Rain so heavy I couldn't see my directions, so I missed a turn that cost me about 10 miles. No biggie. But soaked tonight 😔 and will probably get rained on tonight as well. Hope this is all over this evening.

Stopping early because I don't think I'll find any better place tonight.

  • Tomorrow It Begins 😁

    August 1 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 66 °F

I was up at 0400 this morning. Not intentionally, but I didn't try to go back to sleep because we have to be at the starting line between 0400 and 0430 in the morning. I plan on getting up at 0400 like usual when I'm sleeping by the bike and I'll get there when I get there. We leave at 0600. Plenty of time.

I'm nowhere near as nervous this evening as I was the evening before my first Hoka Hey in 2022. I don't know exactly why not, but I think it's a combination of already having ridden almost 82,000 miles this year plus knowing what I'm getting myself into for this event.

I've been off the bike for 6 days now, minus some very short trips, and while it's been a great break, I'm honestly ready to get back on the road and start racking up the miles again.

What can you expect from me during the next 11,000 miles? I intend to post each evening just before I go to sleep, but I remember 2022, so I doubt there will be any text in my posts. But you'll get to see my route for that day and they'll be pictures of my odometer.

What do I expect of myself over the next 11,000 miles? I expect exhaustion, pain, and tears. I also expect to be thrilled by sunrises, emboldened by successfully navigating twisty unfamiliar roads, and rejuvenated by my well rehearsed camping technique. Did I mention tears?

See y'all at the Finish Line!!! 💪💪💪

  • Lunch With Monsters

    July 31 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 68 °F

Another morning of sleeping in was terrific, but I'm getting spoiled 🤣.

I finally rolled out of bed around 0900 and began organizing my gear. During the 2022 Hoka Hey, I wanted a lot of time messing with my gear, so I want to make sure the things I think I'll need most often are the easiest to get to.

For lunch, three of us took an Uber a few miles away to meet up with the Mile Monsters. It's an extraordinary group of 58 riders 😱 who are just as crazy as I am (and some much more so) 🤣. Together, we've raised over $67,000 this year for our 7 Heroes ($3,300 for me)!!

A couple of hours later I was back in the hotel pool, but I had to share with kids today, so I didn't stay long.

We just had dinner downstairs and the introvert in me has taken "us" 😉 back to the room for an early night.

  • 🤬 but it ends with Tips From A Pro 🤣

    July 28 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

It was really nice to sleep in until 0630 this morning 🤣. I was awake, but I didn't get out of bed until 0900 🤣👍.

My first order of business this morning was to go to an urgent care clinic. I thought I was super lucky by having a hospital with a clinic literally across the street from the hotel. So I went.

The next hour of my life was on the phone with both the VA and Tricare only to discover the clinic accepted neither despite them telling me they did 🤬.

Tricare pointed me to another clinic, so I rode over there. Not only did they take Tricare, but they also took my VA, which does not have a co-pay like Tricare. 👍 Everybody was super nice, and best of all, the doc truly listened to my history and symptoms and filled the script with my usual concoction even before the test results came back. [These are routine problems and nothing serious. I'm just getting a jump on them so they don't peak during the Hoka Hey, which they would do otherwise.] Then, they sent my script to Walgreens.

Again, they were really nice, but I spent the next hour waiting for them to fill the script 😞. But they didn't because they didn't accept either VA or Tricare. WTF? I've used them for years. 🤬 They said they would send the script to CVS across the street if I would go there and tell them what's going on.

Off to CVS...where I met the nastiest most unprofessional pharmacist I have ever encountered. She refused to take the script 🤬. She said I had used all of my outside scripts for the year and I had to go to the VA. Um, no, there's no such thing. And Tricare insurance has nothing to do with the VA. She told me again that I had to go to the VA. Fuck her. 🤬

I went back to Walgreens and explained that ignorant conversation. I asked them to tell me what it would cost with no insurance and to go ahead and fill it--I have to have it--and I'll see what I can figure out 😞.

While they were taking care of other customers, I called Tricare. After 10 minutes of making my way through the idiotic AI system 🤬, I finally got to a human being who wasn't much better. I explained what was going on and he said tha both Walgreens and CVS are in network to accept Tricare. He asked what the Walgreens computer said when they attempted to run it, and I asked him to wait as the assistant finished with the customer she was helping. He hung up on me. 🤬

I spent another 10 minutes with the same idiotic AI system 🤬, and finally got to a human being who was a little bit better than the previous human being but still not much better than the AI. All she did was transfer me to Express Scripts, the contractor for Tricare pharmaceuticals.

Another 5 minutes of AI 💩 [they need a poo emoji without a smile!] to reach the most helpful person on the phone yet. She explained the problem and fixed it so that Walgreens could bill Tricare insurance for my script.

    Here's the problem:

If you have another insurance listed at a pharmacy, like VA, and they run it before Tricare but then run Tricare, it will automatically "tell" Tricare that you have other insurance, which will flag your account. When your account is flagged, it will literally tell the pharmacy to bill the primary insurance and it will not allow them to bill Tricare. You can remove the flag by calling Express Scripts, but you'll have to call every time. 🤬 Every. 🤬 Time. 🤬 This has never happened until this year, March exactly, so who's stupid idea was this? 🤬

After hours of the whole fiasco, I figured I might as well stop at Walmart on my way back to the hotel. I mean, my blood pressure was already high, so what harm could it do, right 😉? Actually, no, it was fine. I got what I needed or a substitute, and made it back to the hotel a few minutes ago.

Now, it's time to check out the pool with my travelin' man's cooler aka trashcan 🤣 full of cheap but ice cold adult beverages 😎. I'm using my SharonFest coozie that I got from Cincinnati. Thanks again, Buffalo Bob!!

TIPS FROM A PRO: If you're using hotel trash cans as coolers, you have to use the cheap ones. The nice metal cans leak. The trash cans also sweat a lot, so I recommend putting them in the bathtub or the sink when you're in your room. And if you're trying to make the ice last to avoid a trip down the hall in your undies, you can wrap a bath towel around the can and flip the end over the top. That will insulate it a little. 🍻

  • Arrival in Woodstock

    July 27 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

I lmanaged to get some decent rest last night despite the temperature remaining over 80°F. I had to get up once to pee.... I don't mind peeing in public. I just try to hide from where I think cameras may be looking. I'm fairly certain I was hiding when I tucked myself behind a large bike trailer that I camped next to. However, when I was getting ready to roll, I discovered my pee left quite the trail down the parking lot, all the way to the drain. I really had to go 🤣.

It was a fairly uneventful day, just riding the Iowa and Wisconsin byways for the AULDR challenge and hitting a couple of Tour of Honor stops and HDs along the way. I also bagged the Wisconsin State Capitol building 💪.

But there's always something that happens, right? This time it wasn't while I was riding.

I was in a gas station, and the male attendant decided to make a joke with me. He said, "A woman's perogative is to change her mind. A man's responsibility is to change it back." 🤔 I replied, "No, the man's responsibility is to tell her, 'I support your decision.'" And in my brain I continued with, "She doesn't give a fuck what you think, you misogynistic prick 🖕." He didn't have anything else say to me 🤣.

I got to the hotel about 1530 without (yay!) running into the back of a giant thunderstorm...although it did drop the wind temperature quite significantly. Happily, while unloading the bike, I ran into none other than Junie Rose, the Hoka Hey organizer, and Jimmy. And now we're about to go grab some dinner. I'll probably get mine take away as I'm too hot to eat right now.

Looking forward to the pool 😁.

  • Hot, Sticky, and Nasty 🥵

    July 26 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 82 °F

It's strange how just a couple of days off the bike and in a bed with air conditioning can really spoil you. Today was well over 90°F from about 1000 to 2100. The humidity is crazy high; everything is wet. It's still about 85° in my tent with no air flow. I can feel sweat pouring off of me. I don't know if I'll get any rest tonight 😞.

I rode the Indiana 50 Rides byway and the Illinois Lincoln Highway, which took me all freaking day because of all the town, stop lights, and idiots. In bumper-to-bumper traffic in Joliet, one car decided they wanted to be in my lane. Even though I was right beside the driver's door, they just slowly pulled into the lane right on top of me and forced me into the yellow stripes. I really wanted to smash their mirror, but I figured I'd break my hand 🤣.

Around 2000, I dodged a fairly large storm by hiding in a carwash at a BP station. The attendant came out to shut it down for the night, but when I explained what I was doing, he let me stay. Nice guy👍. It never rained, but I would've had to ride straight through it, and I just wasn't up for it.

    July 22 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Last night's storm was a doozy. The thunder scared the 💩 out of me! But the bike was fine, and I got a great rest 👍.

I was up at 0530 but since it was still dark, I laid back down for another hour. After a storm like that, I expected leaves, branches, mud, and gravel to be all over the roads, and since I wasn't in a rush, I didn't have to try to navigate that mess in the dark.

Fortunately, the roads were clearer than I expected, and I made great time to my next two capitol buildings, West Virginia and Ohio 💪. I'm staying with my friend tonight in Columbus before heading to Cincinnati tomorrow for my pre-Hoka Hey service at Powder Keg HD 😁. It's getting real 😳.

  • 5 Wins, Maybe 6...

    July 19 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Oh, what a great day! Beautiful weather, considerate drivers, practically no semis, and twisty roads that leave you feeling drained but accomplished.

I was really tired when I laid down last night, so I was out very quickly. Unfortunately, the weather didn't let me stay that way. No rain, but the wind tried to turn my sleeping bag into a sail. Motorcycling is expensive enough; I can't afford boating, too 🤣.

After trying to roll myself up and tuck in all the flappy bits [not mine, the sleeping bag's], I finally had to get up and move so that one of the picnic tables could block the gusts. That worked great, and I slept very hard until 0500, when I woke up, packed up, and rolled out.

Because Love's was right across the street, I got to start my day with hot coffee and hot food! Win #1! 🥇

After a few stops, I got to ride the Triple Nickel (OH-155), Ohio's 50 Rides ride. Man, what a blast! It is so freaky when the road turns right at the crest of the hill. Even when you see the turn coming on your gps, it is still freaky. But when you time it right, it's freaky awesome! Win #2! 🥇

I spent the rest of the day squiggling through Southeast Ohio and North West Virginia, and I'm now in Western Pennsylvania.

Like I mentioned at the beginning, today was just terrific. Weather was perfect, traffic was great, nobody tried to kill me, and everybody was just nice. Oh. Yeah. Except her.

As usual, I pulled up to the gas pump, filled the bike, and had to go inside to get a receipt. Again, as usual, I took my water bottles to refill them and headed directly to the restroom. Yes, as usual, the women's bathroom was multi-use with two stalls with massive cracks in them so you have to keep your undies over your knees to block your bits and hope the toilet is the right shape so that you don't splash on them (We're a first world nation and can't pee in private? WTF? Don't get me started.)

Just as I had unzipped my riding suit and was about to enter a stall, the store clerk banged on the door and yelled something. I still had on my earplugs and helmet so I couldn't tell what. But hearing the commotion, I turned around to the door as she pushed it open. Not usual. She was yelling at me that this was the women's bathroom. So, I manhandled my massive mammaries directly at her, to which she sheepishly said, "Sorry," and skedaddled. 🤣 Win #3 🥇

[For any of my trans friends out there, if you're accosted like this, and I know you are, let your girls talk for themselves!!!🍈🍈]

She didn't have anything else to say to me when I asked for the receipt. I accept that and take it as Win #4 🤣! 🥇

I'm also taking Win #5 🥇 in that I've gone 5 nights in a row camping, including the soaking I got the other night 😞. To celebrate, I got a hotel room. Not to get too personal, but I just spent 30 minutes in the shower getting clean and nursing the severe heat rash I discovered in both armpit areas and around those massive mammaries 😉. I have a small stick of zinc oxide made for baby butts that will do the trick so no worries. Getting to take off the sports bra and sleeping in air conditioning is going to help a bunch, too. Win #6? I'll know I the morning 🤣.

I've made great time, and I'm really excited to see my friends in the Columbus and Cincinnati areas in a couple of days. As bad as some of the memories are, I'm really happy to be almost back in the Cincinnati area. Maybe I'll go take a look at my house 🤔.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Under Shelter

    July 18 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Despite breaking my rule of not riding between the hours of 0200 to 0400, I survived this morning. I even managed to dodge an entire family of live raccoons, a massive dead skunk, and I don't know how many deer.

One of my early photo stops was an American Legion or VFW Post, and they had a park bench by the side of their parking lot, so I laid down with my helmet on and slept for about 30 minutes until the sun woke me up, which I knew it would do. That helped a lot.

I was pretty much dry by lunch. With only 2 hours of sleep last night and a 30 minute nap this morning, it was a real struggle to stay awake this afternoon. At 1430 I stopped at Wendy's to eat and cool off. I stayed there for 2 hours, which also really helped.

I've made it down into Ohio and am camped underneath the pavilion at Napoleon HD. I called it quits at about 1800 while the sun was still up and unpacked all my wet things to let them dry and air out. Everything seems to be good now. I'm not in the tent tonight, and it's not supposed to rain, but we know how that goes 🤣.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Freight Train

    July 18 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

Half an hour ago a freight train ran over me. I mean, the storm I had hoped would stay north didn't. It blew in so hard and fast that by the time I woke up to it, the tent was a lake and everything in it, including my pillow, sleeping bag, and riding suit, were completely soaked. I'm not even wearing socks because they were in the lake, and why put on dry socks then stick them in wet boots.

I'm breaking my rule and riding between 0200-0400.

  • Don't Be A Nancy

    July 17 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

    1. Nancy didn't want to follow the posted detour signs.
    2. Nancy chose her own detour that started as gravel, turned into dirt, then became sand.
    3. Nancy doesn't have the skill set to ride in the sand.
    4. Nancy had to use her jack, then power walk the bike half a mile.
    5. Follow the posted detours. Don't be a Nancy. 🤣

Let's start from the beginning, shall we?

I made it through the Wisconsin 50 Rides with almost no trouble, but as I was leaving the peninsula, a terribly strong storm came flying through. I dove under a gas station pump overhang...I also needed gas...and stayed for about 30 minutes until it passed. I was only a little wet 👍.

On into Michigan's U.P. (Upper Peninsula), where the Yuppers (pronounced YOU-perz) reign supreme 🤣. Unfortunately, I didn't find a pastie place that was open and not crowded, so I missed out on that pleasure 😞. Next time.

I took the Mackinaw (Mackinac?) Bridge, from which you could barely see anything because of the smoke, and dropped down into the Glove, the main part of Michigan above Ohio.

I spent almost 3 hours trying to go 28 miles down the M-119, Michigan's 50 Rides road, because of three separate road closures. Which brings us back to the beginning.

Because I was trying to ride every inch of the road for the AULDR challenge, I chose NOT to follow the posted detour signs, which kept to paved roads. Shorter story: I wound up on one that started okay but quickly turned bad, then worse when it became deep, loose sand. I locked my elbows and kept it straight for longer than I thought I would, but eventually I went down. Not hurt, just in the middle of nowhere and getting dark very fast. I used the jack, then power walked the bike out to the pavement...which I didn't actually know was going to be paved or was going to end up in the middle of the road closed section and have to turn around 😳. But, nope, paved, all good 👍.

I did learn something though, more than it's best to follow the posted detour signs. The bike was down on the right side, so I put the kickstand down before jacking it up. However, the kickstand would've just punched right into the sand and may have cause the bike to go down on the other side. What to do? I have my puck, the big round black one from HD, on a lanyard so I can connect it to my handlebars and pull it up without bending over. But setting the puck down on the ground where I thought the bike might go was a very iffy proposition. So, I used the lanyard to attached the puck to the end of the kickstand. When I jacked him up, I tipped him over to the left, and the kickstand with its attached puck set him gently down on the sand and not IN the sand. Cool 👍

Anyway, once back rolling, I went through every "Road Closed to Thru Traffic" barricades and most of the actual "Road Closed" signs, making u-turns at the last second. I rode as much as I could. I hope AULDR will accept it.

Now, I'm camped behind Zip's 45th Parallel HD hoping the storm that's north of me and lighting up the sky will stay north of me 🤞🤞🤞, but I'm in the tent just in case.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️
