• Stop 1 - Raglan

    27. september 2018, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Keegan, Betty, and I (Lisa) started our road trip by visiting Raglan for a couple days. We got to experience camping for the first time in Betty and NZ, which is definitely different and not quite the same as back home. Camping basically means sleeping in a field... Generally no trees and no privacy Haha.. But hopefully we get better at scoping out the good campgrounds. Night 1 went pretty good, a bit disorganized and I felt a little stressed but I suppose that was to be expected.

We both were itching to do something active so started out 1 day with a pretty great hike up Mt. Karioi. Round trip was about 5hrs and the summit offered some spectacular 360 views. It was a pretty rugged track, not for beginners. Over here, they don't really believe in switch backs, you just go straight up.

The next day we walked around Ranglan, and checked out Bridal Veil Falls. Raglan has character, no doubt. It's got a pretty solid second-hand store patchouli freedom camp scene and surfers. We are neither (yet), so we didn't not necessarily feel at home.

Raglan is well known for there surfing but conditions and timing were not right for us this time. I'm sure we will be back though!

Ok and I have to ask... Why are their so many French and German Backpackers here?... its seriously like 10 (German or French) to 1 (Non-German or French).

    Tourist trapometer: 7/10
Awesometer: 9/10 (Mt. Karioi) 4/10 (Raglan)

  • Betty is ready!

    26. september 2018, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

After 5 days or so of reno's on the van, Betty (the van) is finally ready to go! Not going to lie, it was a bit of a frustrating process getting our bed built and organized for van life. Keegan and I continue to learn how differently our minds work😒... But we pulled it off and excited to get on the road!

We are both so grateful for our amazing roomies the past 2 weeks! They were so generous in sharing their home with us and it was a great way to start out our NZ year. Thanks team!

  • Piha

    22. september 2018, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We met up with Chris Morrison again and his Yankee friend Garrett and checked out Piha, a small village 45 minutes west of Auckland. It's a black sanded surfing beach, beautiful place with a mystical feel. We did a short hike with some epic coastline views called the Mercer Bay Loop, then went into the village and putzed around tidal pools and big-ass rock formations. Giant waves and a lot of scared surfers.Les mer

  • Rangitoto Island

    20. september 2018, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Rangitoto Island is a tourist trap. Straight up. Its a natural area, less than a half hour by ferry from Auckland, has some good views, is pretty unique with its volcanos and whatnot, and has a ton of easy treks. We went early, picked a weekday, and thought that for the most part, we would beat the crowds to the top, as the ferry only had a a couple groups of hikin boot totin backpackers. Welp, turns out a local school group consisting of 150 kids and their overwhelmed supervisors, had the same train of thought.

Lisa and I (Keegan) picked a trail fairly direct 3km trail from the boat up the 260m high volcano. And I would like to say it was relaxing, and we enjoyed the sun and the foreign terrain.. but we were not going to let those children, all 150 of them beat us to the top. Nah uh. Not all of them were racing us I guess. We overheard one 10 year old say "Why are we doing this? the only reason we are doing this is just so we can eat lunch at the top".

We won the race. and shared the summit with about ten selfie-taking Germans. It was rather peaceful. Really cool views of the harbour, you could see the hilly Cormandel region to the south, amd the middle part of the volcano was super green and overgrown.

We were then chased off the summit by the screaming and shouting of those snotty-nosed children, but quickly found some jungly lava flows that we could walk through (maybe 20 meters long so bring a headlamp).

We shared the ferry home with the school group. They were exhausted and quiet. It was wonderful.

  • Devonport

    18. september 2018, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

By this point, Keegan and I had looked at a ton of vans! Feeling a bit discouraged by how shitty they were, we decided to go for a run along the beach to Devonport, a bayside village with fancy cafes and shops. On-route We went up North head, this volcanic cone which has some great habour views, and weird WW-2 era concrete tunnels, as it was used as a defensive bunker.

As fate would have it, the best part of the day was running by a sexy red van with a" for sale sign"! We bought it that night... Technically the van is mine (Lisa) since she's registered to me - we figured this was best since Keegan's car history usually results is something breaking and costly a shit ton of money.

Her name (still the van) is Big Red Betty and she is pretty fantastic:). Now we just need to empty her out and make her liveable.

  • Duder Regional Park & Van Shopping

    16. september 2018, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

While van shopping we managed to do a bit of exploring around. We checked out Duder Regional Park which we actually had all to ourselves. And did a bit of Auckland city exploring. We both agreed, Auckland has some pretty cool trees! .Les mer

  • Waikehe Island trip

    15. september 2018, New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

By our first weekend in Auckland, we were still without a vehicle but over our jet lag and looking to get out for a bit of an adventure. Keegan's university buddy, Chris Morrison recently moved to NZ, and we were able to meet up with him and take a ferry ride out to Waikehe Island (aka Auckland's wine Island). Hoping to do some hiking around but somewhat limited by this Kauri Dieback disease that has closed a lot of trails. Took in some beaches and drank wine instead, no complaints!Les mer

  • Auckland - Days 1 to 3

    11. september 2018, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

    Days 1-3

So, our working holiday started in Auckland. Think Vancouver but, with less bike lanes and people driving on the wrong side of the road. Lisa's old-time field hockey friend Jess, and her husband Chris took us in for a solid two weeks so we could get our shit sorted. They rent a sick flat 20 minutes North of the City Center in the suburb of Milford. There house was awesome, 2 minute walk to an insanely scenic beach, near shops, and not overly touristy.

Our first day we went for a walk along the beach, picked up a cell phone, honestly that was about it. On day three, Chris took us into Auckland to both start our mini quest of finding a camper van, and to hike up a small volcano hill thingy called One Tree Hill. No luck finding a van. The hike was neat, and the ease of it was much welcomed, as we were painfully jet-lagged. Their were lots of sheep and a good view of the city.
