  • The People

    12 de dezembro de 2017, China ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

During the first moments always hard to read, it is great to see how very skeptical faces turn into wide smiles. This is what happens to me many times each day. On the streets, in the metro, in restaurants or in stores. It’s like this:

    I look at someone.
She looks back at me, pokerface.
    I smile.
    She smiles even more.
    I say “hello!”
    She cracks up laughing.

Especially children are very interested. They sometimes just stare at me, especially if I am wearing my cap or even sunglasses :)

  • Mobile first

    13 de dezembro de 2017, China ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

In China, money doesn’t count a lot anymore. It is all about the smartphone! Everyone is just paying via QR code, which is connected to WeChat or Alipay. Tencent and Alibaba are not only social media or e-commerce platforms anymore, they are actually very strong in financial services.

If you go out for lunch or for some drinks after work in a group, one single person will take care of the bill and the others will just digitally transfer their share to that person’s account. This is very convenient and no one actually uses cash anymore (besides the weird German who still has Cash only ...)

And if your smartphone ever runs out of battery ... the next charging station is only one store away :) and you will pay for the electricity by ... of course: digital currency.

  • On the menu today: frogs.

    14 de dezembro de 2017, China ⋅ 🌫 4 °C

Alright, one step further into the world of eating animal parts. It is pretty common to eat frogs here in China, and they actually tasted quite nice. But frogs are also on the menu in many other countries of the world, also including Spain, Greece and, of course, France. There are sources that say that worldwide around 3.2 billion frogs are traded each year (!) By the way: the round vegetable that you can see in the picture is actually from the root of the Lotus.Leia mais

  • Shanghai 1933 (wow!)

    17 de dezembro de 2017, China ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

Shanghai 1933 was built as a slaughterhouse and is now the home of some fancy stores, restaurants, galleries and a micro theatre. It was designed by British architects and is a VERY fine peace of ... well ... architecture. The concrete structure on four floors seems to change every time you go around a corner or even just slightly move your head. If it wasn’t for the cold we could have walked around the building for hours (thanks Vivian for leading me here).

Forget all the buildings in modern buildings in Shanghai. THIS is the place to be, don’t miss out!

In the summer, there seem to be quite famous roof top parties. I think I’ll need to be back to Shanghai one day ...

  • Shanghai's "Old Town"

    17 de dezembro de 2017, China ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Wow what a place ... And this is what’s left over from the very old streets and homes of Shanghai. Around Wutong Road, we walked very narrow roads and found very bizarre places that are so different from modern China. It is very hard to describe, just see for yourself. The only thing about these places: they will soon have to go and make room for Skyscrapers. Is it a curse because nothing will be left of the old history of Shanghai? Or is it a blessing because it is a very hard life in these homes?Leia mais

  • Taking a nap

    21 de dezembro de 2017, China ⋅ 🌙 3 °C

I saw it a couple of times, but always after lunch time. People just take little naps, whenever they are right now. I think that’s great. We should start doin that again. Everything is always moving so fast and it gets harder to find time for small breaks in the daily work life.Leia mais

  • Bye bye Nanjing

    22 de dezembro de 2017, China ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

And that was it ... three weeks in Nanjing are over. It was .... amazing, different, sometimes strange, but sill great. Now, after an hour long subway ride, an hour of waiting in lines for passport control and security and a quick soup at the airport (with hot water from the dispenser) I am at the gate, ready to board.

Next stop: Thailand, Bangkok, Heat, Vacation, Girlfriend, Chillaxing, Adventure, Beach, Sun, another awesome cultural experience, nature, ocean, and food.
