We took the night train to Victoria Falls, having quite a social evening (read VERY social evening with several cabins becoming packed party rooms) before looking out of the window in the early morning to see lions, reedbuck and elephants. We walked onto the bridge over the Zambezi, which is the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, watching some people bungee jump and getting a glimpse towards the falls. In a massive change from border protocol, we just had a scrap of paper stamped in order to let us leave/return to Zimbabwe, which no-one wanted to check in either direction.
Victoria Falls is very much established as a tourist centre and whilst small and a bit rough around the edges, has a charming atmosphere. The wildlife is free to roam, including warthog and charming banded mongoose. Elephants and lion also roam at night, with elephants making holes in walls to get to the fruit trees. Best to avoid dark places after nightfall! (Not a bad bit of travel advice, however not always.....).Lue lisää
A walk from the camp to the actual falls on the Zimbabwe side, looking across the gorge at the Zambia falls. They are currently at low water so separate into smaller falls rather than one large sheet of water (when it is high water not much can be seen due to the spray and mist). Walked along the gorge edge seeing the various falls including devils pool & cataract, rainbow fall and danger point which we dangled our legs over the cliff edge - of course!
There were plenty of warthogs to keep us amused.
A European style cafe has fed us well with excellent steak, wine (theme emerging!) and friendly staff as a break from truck cooking and the starch/carb based African diet. Zimbabwe also has a fantastic pie industry, with proper meat/Cornish varieties available in markets.
On another day we watched James Junior (another guy on the truck whose middle name is Richard and ipad unlock code spookily similar!) jump and slide into the gorge from a beautiful cliff top cafe. Walking back to town through the bush, we saw 6 wild elephants grazing - viewing from around 75m away, far enough to run if needs be.
Louisa had a close wildlife encounter when she found a scorpion in the pants James had been drying on the line - dread to think of the consequences if he had stayed hidden...........Lue lisää
mg.bigadventureGlad you got to see Victoria Falls. It was dry season when we went too, about 8 years ago - but your photos look better, more water going over. Don't like the sound of the scorpion - glad you found it before the pants were reused!!! We leave Isle of Wight tomorrow - visiting family in Dorset, then Kirsty in Oxfordshire, on our way home.
Lynda RalphFantastic pics, another memorable location. Glad you didn't get too close to the wildlife xxx

mg.bigadventureThe train looks rickety but cool. We LOVE travelling by train. Hope you enjoyed it too. Hope you survived the party night & managed to get a bit of sleep at least, after all your socialising!

Lyndsay McDonnellSurprised you were up very early to look out of the train windows at the animals after the VERY social evening!! But as long as you are enjoying yourselves............. Have fun, love xxxx
